Clearly there is a weakness there. If surgery is what will keep it from happening again and again then he should get it done and take the summer to recover.

The fabled ankle forcefield surgery, protecting him from clumsy oafs landing square on his ankle

Get it done, he could do with a good rest too, how many summers has he had off since he broke into the first team? 2?

I hate to disagree with expert people, but I would question their views: have not all of his ankle injuries been due to impact? How is surgery going to prevent people tackling him?

I would guess it's more a case of strengthening the ligaments through surgery so that they wouldn't get injured so easily in an impact-type tackle.

Well he can’t carry on like this can he. He used to get this ankle injury once a season, now it’s twice. If surgery will help, he hasn’t really got a choice. Otherwise he’ll have retire within a couple of years.

I think it's more he gets the impact and the ankle then rolls and that's where the damage is done, the impact alone won't do the ligament damage.
If he can strengthen his already damaged ligaments then when he gets the kick on his ankles he will just have brushed and swollen ones instead of almost always getting worse damage.

See, while I don't doubt this guy's credentials to suggest it might help, without seeing any medical information about the patient at all, this is why we have doctors and nurses working a defensive line in front of surgeons - their first resolution to everything is to take it apart, tinker with it and put it back together - what kind of madcase trusts a diagnosis given by a surgeon?? OF COURSE it'll suggest surgery, that's what they do, it's what they know.

He might need surgery, he might just need intensive physio and a lucky streak, but that will be the physio and his doctor's call, they'll ring the surgeon if they need his opinion, but man, they do love to hang around injured sports people like Jesus around anyone looking vaguely leprosy-y.

This amount of ankle injuries at his age is legitimately worrying. I'm not saying every one has the same path as them but if you want previous extreme examples look at andy carroll and jack wilshire.

If it benefits him get it done. Forget England, all Southgate has done is work him like a dog while he rests Liverpool and United players. We have already lost too many players on England duties.

Surgery is the absolute last resort. If it can heal fine with rest and recovery, then that's always the preferred option.

He may just need different boots or ankle strapping.

He won't get it done yet if its needed. If we progress in the CL then he will try and rush back for that plus he will want to lift that trophy for england if we win the nations league.
