Surgeon Comments on Harry Kane Injury ...

Two experts have weighed in on Harry Kane’s injury that he sustained in the 4-1 win against Bournemouth on Sunday.

One Tottenham fan asked the opinion of David Chao, a former NFL team head doc and a sports medical analyst on Twitter.

Chao said that the injury looked worse than it was and that it “seems to be inversion low standard right ankle strain.”

He said that Kane should be back “sooner than you think”.

Tottenham fans chimed in on the subject, saying that Kane had a history of ankle injuries and would that change the prognosis?

Eric Abrams, a foot and ankle surgeon, said that Kane hadn’t ruptured all three lateral ligaments last year.
He added that if he had he would have needed reconstructive surgery to play at the top level.

He went on to say that this injury is likely “a result of inherent instability from prior injury.”

He said that if he hasn’t torn his CFL that he should be back in a “few weeks to a month”.

However, he did add that if Kane has torn his CFL, that he would miss the World Cup.

Tottenham fans are obviously worried about the Kane injury and will be desperate to cling onto any news. It must be said that these two verdicts, albeit from experts in their field, are based purely on visual evidence and Spurs fans shouldn’t read too much into them. However, if their prognosis are correct then it would be great news. The doomsday scenario is the torn CFL, which would rule him out of the World Cup and the rest of the PL season, but the fact that he wasn’t taken out on a stretcher surely makes this highly unlikely? Spurs have said they won’t give an official update today but with Kane due for a scan on Monday, there should be some official news on Tuesday.

I think he'll be okay. If he'd torn something, he'll have known 100% and his reaction to the injury would have been different

Not sure why people are making out it’s to do with a weakness in his ankle. It’s the fact he goes in 100% and 15 stone Keepers keep landing on him.

Like when a boxer gets knocked out by a 300lbs monster and people say he has a glass chin afterwards

Pinch of salt needed I suppose. Even a surgeon can't possibly be able to tell accurately what damage has been done just by watching a replay of the incident.

I believe he may or may not be simply bruised all the way up to heavily injured. He could or could not play in the FA cup again this season for instance, but if he doesn't that could be bad for the world cup. He can or cannot score anyway, mostly can, so it's a sensitive topic.

Urgh, I love that people with no clue (everyone on SC, muggy pundits who don’t have an individual idea and two surgeons who have not assessed Kane) have all chipped in with their 2 cents

I remember that Bale one that looked absolutely horrendous (and I believe he left the pitch in tears) that turned out to be minor.

We can't tell just by looking.

Where's @Lemon when you need him?

Lemon would recommend kane immediately implement a strict diet of turmeric, magnesium, kale and 4.267 day old spinach smoothies, followed by hanging upside down in a door way for 6min 12s spells.

If Kane is out for a long time then we had better promote Harry Kane-Peters from the academy

Levy is still debugging his player cloning machine, dubbed the Peterzer. If Levy does decide it's ready to peterz Harry Kane, he will want to make sure that Harry Kane-Peters doesn't come out looking completely fucking different this time and plays shit on his first game. Its a bad idea to aim for MOTM when your new - you might not get played again for some reason!

Don’t claim to be an ‘expert’ but being an A&E Registrar (with a degree in Sports Medicine) the experts can speculate all they want, but without examining him & seeing his scan results, it’s impossible to guess time frames on his return to play...

The fact he didn’t go off on a stretcher isn’t necessarily a ‘good sign’, as the concept of not being able to weight bear post an ankle injury is only useful in predicting the likelihood of a fracture (google Ottawa ankle rules...) High grade sprains can take longer to heal than fractures. Sprains are traditionally graded 1-3. Grade 1 is a stretch, & usually 1-2wks, grade 2 is a partial tear & usually 2-4wks, whereas grade 3 is a complete rupture & can take 3+ months before you can return to play (as a generalisation!)

The fact he was in a moon/cam boot is also not concerning, as short term immobilisation immediately post any lateral complex injury is standard care & prevents re-inversion of the ankle

The other comment about needing reconstructive surgery if he had ruptured all 3 ligments is also highly controversial. Multiple studies & reviews have shown no benefit for conversative vs operative management of these injuries, regardless of the grade...

The comment about the torn CFL being the ‘worst case scenario’ is also controversial. Of the 3 lateral collateral ligaments it’s the second most common ligament to be injuried when you have low ankle sprains & isn’t necessary all doom & gloom.

Happy to try & answer any questions on any injuries our players might suffer with. However as I mentioned first up, you can speculate until the cows come home, but without the patient or scan images in front of you, it’ll be pure (educated!) guess work...
