I know this may seem kneejerk to some and ridiculous to others but I guess the situation with how I feel about supporting Spurs is compounded by other things in my life. I've supported Spurs for 35 years and I go to games every year when I can get tickets. I take my kids and they love going to the stadium and singing all the songs and essentially having free license to shout as much as they want.

But supporting Spurs isn't a walk in the park as you all know and I'm finding I don't really enjoy watching us. I don't find it entertaining. On the contrary I find it stressful and anxiety inducing and when we win I'm in a good mood and when we lose it affects me more than I'd like it to. I listen to the podcasts in the hope of hearing some optimism about our future, I read the transfer rumours in the hope of having some exciting news about a new player that can help our cause. But it all seems more and more toxic, divisive and pessimistic. The last few months of the season have not been fun and I feel every match is another moment when I'm going to be let down. I don't blame the players or Ange, I'm very much Ange In because I believe in what he's trying to achieve.

But I've stepped over to the dark side and accept that this is all on Levy. We will likely sack Ange, even though I would want him to have a proper opportunity to bring success and we'll move onto the next manager without properly supporting him with the players necessary to do the job and in 18 months he'll be sacked too. I think after 35 years of supporting the club and going to games I will decide to just stop.

I just feel like I'd prefer not to support any club if it's going to make me feel this way. Is it possible to stop supporting Spurs?

Sorry for the long post but I don't have many other outlets aside from here

i don’t think you’ll be able to stop supporting, but taking a propper break might be a good ide. like you, i don’t get any joy from following spurs and haven’t for some time. i’ve stopped watching every week but still listen to podcasts and hang around here. i’ll be back with more passion when things turn i guess but no point wasting too much energy on something that only makes you feel worse

I think perspective is important. I love Spurs and will always support them, you can't change your team. However, I have come to realise over the years that there are many more important things in life and letting our results, good or bad affect your mood is simply not worth it and something you need to try to rise above, as difficult as you may find that is to do. Don't get me wrong, we lose, I'm pissed off, we win, I'm happy but I don't let it influence my mood for more than a few minutes as ultimately there's nothing I can do to influence what's happening and there are many other good things in life to focus on and things which I can contribute to. I hope you can find a way to focus on other things and not let our results drag you down or ruin your day / week...

I would love to see the back of Enic, I like Ange but don't think he will be with us much longer. I have supported Spurs for 50 plus years & have never felt so disconnected from the club. I will always support them, I will always love the club but I try not to let Spurs ruin/make my weekends etc anymore. I have started going to watch my local team in the Vanerama national league south. It ain't the Lane but its stress free, honest football & I don't get the raving hump if they loose.

I don't think I or anyone can ever stop supporting Spurs.

They'll always be there.

I have taken a step back though ever since poch left and the circus that it has become. I no longer plan my weekend around our games and put other plans first.

I've actually taken a keen interest in going to rugby games over the years (yeah I'm one of those knobs haha). As others have mentioned above though going to watch your local non league is probably way more exciting and better too.

I won't stop supporting Spurs no matter what happens... it's for life... I have the same feelings as you have when we win, play well, lose, bad news, chaos etc.

In todays game when Everton scored the 2nd goal... I went out for a long walk... normally I don't do that because I always try to be a believer... but at the moment it's tough... so I take a small break now and then... from a game/TV, from social media/internet, from buying stuff, from reading the news...

It always helps... it clears my mind and mood... and my love for Spurs is still there.

I don't have Facebook, Instagram, X, Snapchat or anything like that anymore... that's been a very good solution for me.

I've tried not to care, I've tried not to watch and succesfully so for quite a few months last season and the end of Stellini/Mason season, I've tried to not let it effect me or my mental health.

But Christ this club is like an addiction. You think you're out but they pull you back in somehow.

It's impossible not to support in some way unless you're willing to go cold turkey and ignore everything football related.

In answer to your question around stopping supporting spurs; I think it’s easily possible to stop the tangibles. So watching/going to games, buying merch, consuming spurs related content etc.

However, severing the emotional connection would be where you’d likely struggle imo. Not reacting if you saw we’d beaten Arsenal 5-0 or won the FA Cup etc or conversely losing 5-0 and losing in the final. Your emotions would likely dampen down over time but would they go through a resurgence and you get sucked back in if we were to say, win a major piece of silverware? Only you know the answer.

it’s an interesting talking point and one I’ve mulled over before. Like you the results affect my mood more than they should to the point where it probably makes me a worse husband/father (for a period of time) after a really bad result. That’s on me though in the sense that I Should be able to compartmentalise much better than I currently do.

Agreed.

Compartmentalisation is the aim.

Sadly, though, too often the reality is more like this...

Words to live by for sure. Sometimes it’s hard but generally speaking I don’t let it get to me too much, and I certainly don’t take it out on those around me when I’m annoyed about a result. The only game that really affected me for more than one evening was the CL final defeat. I was pretty down about that for a couple of days.

To the thread poster, I would say don’t stop supporting Spurs, it’s your club. But you do need to detach yourself emotionally from it a bit. It’s an up and down thing, and the benefit of being in a truly shit patch like we’re in now is that at least you won’t be let down too hard, as the expectations are currently rock bottom. That’s why the CL final hurt so much, because we were so close to glory.

Yes, it is. I was a Spurs fan from 1995 to 2020, and gave up when football paused for the covid lockdowns and I had a moment of clarity that following football was making me more miserable than it was happy. I genuinely don't give a shit what happens to Tottenham or any other club (I don't even follow what's happening in the sport any more) and I'm much, much happier for it.

Feel the same way but know I can't walk away. I'd surprised if the day ever came.

Whether you want to support forever or walk, we're all feeling the same. Every year from 2019 onwards has been a farce of a crisis with the same old sound bites. We want to win, we're investing in the club's future and once fair play rules come in it will be a game changer.

We can all see the pig flying over the trees with bullsh!t written all over it, let alone smell it.

As Burkinshaw said as he left:

There used to be a football club there.

But you are spending your Sunday evening posting on a Spurs online forum….

I gave up worrying about it a long time ago.

I care, and still have moments, but why worry, or get upset over somethingni cant control. Seems fruitless

This is a HITMAN forum with an unnecessary Sports secton bolted on. ;)

(But seriously, Chat and Discussion & Debate are great, certainly not worth throwing the baby out with the bath water for.)

But you’re still here on a Spurs forum 🤣
