We all hate levy, but this is a levy special, 25 million is nothing, even if he flopps hard, there's a good chance we'll be able to sell him to a Wolfsburg, Sevilla or Monaco for 30 million. It's a transfer that can't really go wrong.

Let's go back to comparing him to players based on the 6 minute youtube videos we watched. I'll start, reminds me of Akinfenwa but possibly stronger.

Reminds me of a midget. But taller.

Usually I can appreciate why you're being negative, even though I often disagree, but on this occasion I just don't understand where you're coming from.

Yes, you may identify bigger priorities than this signing, but ultimately our squad needs addressing in a fair few areas and there's only so many that can be dealt with at a time. The final third is one of those, and even if we also need a DM and a full back of some description, if players of the required quality are not available for those positions but one is for this, then surely it's best to strengthen the position we can at this time and move onto the other areas in the summer? Signing Bergwijn isn't at the expense of other areas, it doesn't work like that, it's about improving what we are able to, when we are able to. Right now we are able to sign Bergwijn to improve our flanks, so we are. Hopefully the same applies to a centre forward of some description and a ball winning midfielder of some description, but ultimately we are not the only players in the market, and at this time of year it is far harder to get what we need as, if a player is doing well his club are far more likely to put up an (expensive) fight at this time of year than in the summer.

Not sure why the likes of Dortmund would buy him for £30m if he flops hard. I didn't see teams flocking to buy N'Jie, Janssen or Nkoudou. We lost a lot of money on those flops.

There is no DM in the world of much higher quality than Berge - higher yes, but not much higher. And if you include potential the list becomes extremely short.

I love that we are looking at players in the age group you will find Fernandes, Bergwijn etc. Baffling how we went from being very young to rather old quite quickly under Pochettino. I was afraid that Mourinho would continue down the old and experienced route, but it seems not. Berge would supplement Fernandes, Bergwijn, Tanganga, maybe even Aarons etc. perfectly.

Lloris - Alderweireld - Kane would be the experienced spine. Son, Lucas, Davies etc. gives us more than enough experience even if we go all out early 20s on the rest.

My post wasn't intended as negative it was tongue in cheek and no reflection on how I feel about Bergwijn. I was just laughing at yesterday that he was compared to Traore and then Janssen and how we as fans are desperate to prove our knowledge of players from leagues we simply don't watch. I know nothing of him and think for 25-30 mill it's a great deal as if he reaches the supposed potential then we've got a fantastic player and if he doesn't we haven't bankrupted ourselves.

I wonder what his squad number will be.

The epicness of #14 is available. The number of Ginola, Modric and Poyet (and also Ghaly and Nkoudou but you can't win them all)

I hope he gets it. It's an iconic Spurs squad number for me.

In that case consider my over the top post retracted (figuratively, not literally) :)

Great number for a Dutch flair player

Not only money, but clogging up squad places.

Fans are too hung up on transfer fees and prices. There are only two types of transfer : good ones and band ones, and they depend on how the player performs on the pitch.

Yeah the last thing we want is band players stringing us along and drumming up discontent. At the very bass level, a player must be good.

He looks an exciting signing, although we should bear in mind the quality of the Dutch league.

One thing you can see is he has a good combination of both speed and strength, which is something we don’t currently have, apart from Sissoko, who is obviously a different player.

As long as we also buy a proper CF this window, rather than just add this guy to our list of attacking players who “can do a job through the middle”.

You’re right there, and we certainly don’t want any rubbish players who spend all their time blowing their own trumpet.

Reminds me of the Incredible Fanzini Twins; one was the tallest midget in the world, the other was the world's shortest giant.

Anyway, I like this sort of signing, a very good prospect, reasons for us to be optimistic, and because it doesn't break the bank, leaves room (hopefully) for other signings too

I bang on about it every window. Doesn't matter how much the player costs, he has to be the right player. Our own transfer history has shown that. Obviously bringing in proven talent can work in the league, but it also doesn't. Eg. Shevchenko, Veron etc.

The thing I'm most excited by are his assist stats. Sure, it's easier in the Dutch league, but 12 assists last season and 10 in 19 games this season...that's a seriously impressive haul for a player of his age and a huge improvement on Lucas who even at the peak of his powers playing every game at an utterly dominant PSG only averaged about 4 per season.

In losing Eriksen, we're losing a huge chunk of creativity so fingers crossed with The Burger Van driving into town we can keep our strikers fed.

I'm sorry.

It wasn't really "quite quickly" it took over 5 years. 5 years is a long time in football.
