233, but we will have more fixtures this season, besides European football we will hopefully perform better on domestic cups

…and hopefully get some easier draws in the earlier rounds instead of the 3 PL teams we got in the cups last season.

What I did find encouraging about Lankshear on Wednesday night was that he wasn’t on long but he actually scored. Maybe you can question the level of the opposition and maybe I’m being forgetful in my old age but in past pre seasons I don’t remember Parrott scoring that many goals. I think Scarlett scored last season against Shakhtar but I can’t remember that many other goals. I don’t think Veliz was here in time to play any pre season games. They will play well but not get that many goals but Lankshear was on and within 10 minutes has already scored. Veliz and Scarlett had chances once they came on but didn’t score. Now this might age badly and he doesn’t score anymore goals this pre season but for now he’s doing well.
Part of the reason Lankshear is seen as a goal scoring machine and Parrott and Scarlett are not is that Lankshear had a whole season playing U21 football, scoring for fun, whereas Troy and Dane were promoted directly from the U18s to the first team squad, had very few minutes and then had to take their chances on loan, where lack of opportunities, either to get on the pitch or to receive the ball in goal scoring positions, meant that they didn’t shine.

I would also say that the star player for the U21s last season was Donley not Lankshear. No Jamie (and no Iago and no Jude) and Will doesn’t put up those sort of figures.

And, by the same token, the reason Donley is rated more highly than Devine, is that during Alfie’s time with the U21s there was no Lankshear. The forced development of Parrott and Scarlett (and Etete) meant that the U21s for a couple seasons played without a striker.

This is a great post Eddie, spot on. We have to look beyond the stats at times.

Hopefully the U21 comp will keep getting stronger, due to financial fair play forcing teams into looking after their youngsters.

I’m looking forward to watching which of our next batch develop. COYS

I wonder if Alfie will be out on loan again. Ange really likes him apparently and he’s officially part of the first team. Wouldn’t be shocked if he starts the next friendly with Ash.

I think he’s played well in the two friendlies as well. Guess it depends how much game time he’s likely to get this season but I would keep him in the squad until January at least and then reassess. I would send Donley out on loan instead this summer for the season.

Devine quietly going under the radar, two very impressive performances from him. Would love to see him become a part of the first team squad this season.

The discussion about Moore, the kid is clearly ready. Will be in the first team this season.
