I wonder if we got Skinner cause they knew Binks would leave. Thought it was a bit of a strange one at the time.

Has Binks left us???

If so my dream of a team with Binks and Winks in it follows him...:cry:

Early 90s Norwich were fighting in the top of the table and had an impressive UEFA cup run. A lot of that team was built upon Spurs academy products from the 80s that we'd eventually let go, players we very much could have had use for in those days.
Mark Bowen, Ian Crook, Ian Culverhouse, John Polston. Bowen especially was a big miss for us.

Yeah, Bowen was a class LB and we particularly struggled for decent FBs in the early 90s.

Kerry Dixon, Graeme Sounness, Jamie Redknapp, Peter Crouch.....any blatantly obvious ones who had genuine time at the club that opted out and enjoyed fruitful careers at big clubs? Interesting subject whoever raised this one

I think some of the boundaries are being greyed.

Maybe not world class but solid premier League standard we've had quite a few more since then. The two Bournemouth fullbacks, Fredericks at West Ham, Townsend.

I still get quite confused with the contract situations up to 18. Can anyone clarify if this is correct.

1. Pre 17 can literally just walk away anytime but would have to be some sort compensation
2. At 17 can sign a pro deal but no longer than 2 years. Does that contract fully cover club ?
3. At 18 can sign a proper deal of any length like any player.

Is that correct ? So presume Binks was number 2 and we get some money if move is made permanent although probably peanuts.

binks probably never signed a pro.

spurs don't announce first pro contracts because more or less every 2nd year player gets offered one, only way we find out is if the player posts it on social media or someone like lilywhite_rose reports it.

Agree. I don't really get this conversation as you well know. A young player leaves, then as a defence mechanism we start doing the roll call of players who became world class after they left. What for?

This notion of a player having to become world class to eat our words, and prove to have ever been a viable option for us is stupid. Tanganga may not become world class and he has already made a great impression on the team, Winks will likely never be world class but if he left before he got a chance with us we would have lost his contribution. Chelsea have 6/7 academy players in their current squad, only 1 or 2 may become World Class but it's clear they've all played an important role in their season today and will likely to in the future. Had they not been given a chance more time would've been invested in overage players, instead as a total they're all probably valued around 200m. If they hadn't played possibly a combined 20m. That's a big loss to a club.

Veljkovic alone has played 3 consistent seasons at CB in the Bundesliga, he's another that could easily have played for us. But we're content on buying Sanchez and Foyth when we could've potentially just saved money with him.

If only we held every player to the standard we hold academy players to. They never become world class so they're no great loss or have no real value to us, the majority of our signings never become world class, but we still recognise their importance.

iirc there was a credible itk (whom i forgot the name) shared the story that veljkovic missed his chance to be on the bench against yanited due to a traffic jam or something like that :cautious:

Sadly for Bowen his time for us will forever be defined for a mistake against Everton when his mistake allowed Trevor Sreven through and directly to an Everton goal which was the begining of the end for our hopes of winning the League that season

Considering the lack of central defenders at that time the loss of Polston and Danny Maddix (who left because we signed Ruddock from Millwall) . Incidentally John Polston's brother Andy also made a single appearance for us and with his brother playing in the same game were a very rare occurence at any club

Des Walker.

I've never heard Des Walker was with us. Forest picked him from non-league. Did we let him go as a kid?

Yes, I remember reading about him in 1990 or 1991 that he was a Spurs fan who was released by the club as a youngster.

I'd never heard of this until now.

Yet the Official Site has a couple of archived pages on where ex-players were plying their trade once they'd left Tottenham. And, if you look under 'W', you'll see that Des Walker is down as a former youth player...

https://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news-archive-1/life-after-the-lane-1/

Which means he probably grew up imagining scoring the winning goal in a FA Cup Final for Tottenham...

Mind.

Blown.

I've also seen John Barnes listed as a former Spur but never seen any proof of that.

Quinton Fortune is another one who was in our youth teams before leaving to join Atletico Madrid and then Man United.

His wikipedia only lists Stowe Boys Club and Sudbury Court before he joined Watford at 17. Perhaps we had him on trial but no more than that.

The fee Watford paid for him was a set of kits!

I think you've made some pretty big jumps there.

Sanchez and Foyth look like much better players than Veljkovic. I don't think playing for a relegation favourite side makes you suddenly just as good as either of Sanchez or Foyth.
