Especially to join a duff team in a duff league. Doesn't really make any sense to me.
Yeah, Canada's nice by all accounts but it's hardly the place for a youth international to go and make his name.
Seems like a lack of real ambition, surely he'd learn more and improve more in a decent league?
The standard of play in MLS is continually improving, and if he does well there is a good chance he'll get a move to one of the better clubs in a european league. For example, Alphoso Davies went from Vancouver to Bayern, and we all saw what he can do when we played them in Munich.

Who was the last youngster to leave us and go on to become a top, top class player? One who would have ended up a first team regular at ours if they had stayed?

Genuine question. Im guessing it’s a fairly long time ago. I suspect Binks isn’t going to buck the trend. Still, a very strange move.

Peter Crouch?

Fair point and if as mentioned above, they are linked with Bologna, maybe there's a route lined up to Italy.
You just hear of too many youngsters being plucked from MLS, so it seems a strange choice to me.

I can't think of any since Graeme Souness; but there must surely be somebody more recent than the early-70s.

Well, he sort of did I guess! Wouldn’t call him top class of course and even when we bought him back I remember more than a few rolling their eyes. He did ok for us to be fair
Whether you appreciated him stylistically, the guy had an amazing career. Played in the CL final, major tournaments for England, over 600 club games.

I liked him. He had a great career. I’m talking top, top class though mate. Peter Crouch was a decent to good Premier League player.

I've never heard Des Walker was with us. Forest picked him from non-league. Did we let him go as a kid?

Yes, I remember reading about him in 1990 or 1991 that he was a Spurs fan who was released by the club as a youngster.

I wonder if we got Skinner cause they knew Binks would leave. Thought it was a bit of a strange one at the time.

Jamie Redknapp, until he decided he was homesick and joined his dad at Bournemouth.

Soon after, he joined Liverpool.

He scored 20 odd goals for England though. I know he has his detractors but producing an international with 20 goals is good. Who else have we produced that’s done that? Just Kane. I’d like to know how many other teams have done that in the last couple of decades, Liverpool maybe with fowler and Owen. I can’t think of anyone else.

This. A friend of mine who works with football data and analytics says that they measure MLS at the same level as Eredevisie. MLS is a bit more up and down though.

Crouch is a serious footballer. He made the PL 100 club and has one of the best goal ratios for England of any player ever.
