as i said before, it's not easy to tell who will do well and who won't, when a previously rated player gets stuck in the u23 rut you naturally start to move away from them and look towards the next batch but it doesn't mean they're now bad players. before we let jaden brown go did you think that he'd soon be starting in the championship? I watched some of the huddersfield game yesterday and he was looking strong and composed, yet if you'd have looked at him towards the end of his time in the u23s you'd probably have said he might do alright in league 2 if he's lucky. similar story for tanganga, he was stagnating badly and no one here hardly mentioned him anymore and just thought well he'll be gone soon to a lower league side but then he gets a few games with the first team(thanks to eyoma being injured) and he reminds people that there's still a player in there, just a shame he's now going to spend all year doing nothing.

there are a few simple changes i would make to the academy(as far as the u23s go anyway) -

1) promising talents allowed to go on loan much earlier. the previous generation of players produced were going out on loan at 17-18, now we hardly let anyone under the age of 20 go even when it's clear that the u23 is doing little for their development

2) those who clearly aren't good enough are let go earlier, i don't mind the odd one here and there for numbers sake but when they're blocking better/younger players from playing then it becomes a problem

3) fringe first teamers should be allowed to drop down to the u23s. first of all it gets those players some much needed match sharpness. secondly those players will bring the quality of the team up, therefore making those i've referred to in point 1 a more attractive loan proposition to other clubs. lastly it's good experience for the younger players to play alongside better and experienced players.

4) get rid of burnett

unfortunately though none of those are going to happen, not under pochettino anyway.

Not long till we can actually have viable conversations on here again.

I hope that if Poch is changed, then whoever comes in also changes the management and focus of the development setup, bring them closer integration with the first team, and also better use of loans for development. Get them out earlier albeit to lesser clubs initially, then work them up the league pyramid, so by 21/22 they’re ready for PL football. Look at how Chelsea manage their players, yes it’s largely a money making scheme, but equally when they have a transfer ban like this summer, they are able to reintegrate some talented young players who have benefitted from loans to come into the side with decent experience already. Chelsea don’t take the Poch approach of keeping them hanging around the U23 limbo.

There's a weird irony in the tone of this thread regarding academy integration (lack of) and yet two of Poch's favourites who if they weren't academy products would have all sorts of calls to be dropped (Kane and Winks).

I agree with the posters sharing unhappiness at our youth pathway. I myself have contributed. But I'd have no problem if a player like Skipp gets a chance at the expense of Winks in the coming games or Kane loses his untouchable tag, Son and Lucas get a start together and Parrott has a space on the bench.

personally i think fans on the whole give more leeway to big name/big money signings than they do academy players, i'm surprised that you say there aren't calls to drop winks as at least from what i can see he's been taking a battering lately. no player should be untouchable but some have more credit in the bank than others. i would like to see skipp get a chance as he's actually grown up playing the role that we currently lack but poch will probably try dier there again first because that worked so well against brighton, or give wanyama another go, or try foyth there, or just carry on with winks and sissoko.

Shout out to Austin who made the bench against Watford and to our previous Nathan Byrne who's now in the Championship with Wigan playing really well

Yes, well done Nathan and Brandon. I remember watching Nathan as an U15/16 and strangely enough he was one of the last ones in that age group to get offered a scholarship. He had to work for it right up to the last few weeks. He barely squeaked in.

I mentioned a long while ago that ethos to be a Puritan in our beliefs to acquire top speck academy prospects, we have to pay. But we don’t all agree on that, and the world is changing. We lost a youngster or two in the summer for that very reason.

Do you mean lost out on a youngster or two, or lost a youngster or two?

Despite what some people think we do have players in our youth that are talented and this is my opinion on a few of them and the players around the first team not playing football.

Oliver Skipp - If he gets the right amount of games he can play for both Spurs and England over the next few years.

If Skipp is not going to play then he needs to be loaned out in January for the rest of the season.

Jack Roles - we do not know how good he is but after this brilliant loan we should put him in the first team squad next season and play him to find out how good or bad he is because it will be "the right time to do so".

KWP - He should be better than what he is right now and he would have been if he had been loaned out over the last two years instead of just training every week,If we are not going to sell then he needs a loan as soon as the window opens.

Japhet Tanganga - Has been around for a long time,he has that physical presence that people keep talking about,he is aggressive and is good in the air,if they are not going to give him game time then loan him out.

We have some brilliant players who are still very young but can go on and play for the first team.

Troy Parrott -Do not have to say much about him because most have seen him play,I still think he needs a bit more time but would have no problem if he ended up on the bench.

Dennis Cirkin LB - He is one of the best players we have in our youth setup and at only 17 he is built like a first team player,he has a physical presence and he is a very good defender who has pace and gets up and down the pitch with no problems what so ever.

He is playing CB to cover players missing for the u18s but he has played u23 football and he has looked very good in them games,I could see him play behind Ryan Sessegnon and I think it could work for both players at some point in the future.

J’Neil Bennett - He is brilliant and I have seen so many defenders and midfielders struggle against him and I think had he been fit in the summer he could have gone on the Pre-season tour and looked just as good as Tanganga,Parrott or any other player and I do think he is very underrated.

Harvey White - He will play for the first team I am sure of that, best left foot you have seen in a long time and his passing is spot on and he is a Intelligent player who reads the game well.

He is not the fastest and will need to find a bit more pace if he can,he is not the biggest and will need to get stronger and grow a bit more but this has not stopped him playing u23 football and looking like one of our better players just like Cirkin.

Luis Binks - What ever level of football he ends up playing he will end up captain of that team,he has a physical presence and he is good on the ball and his long passing is very good "he did have a bit of a mare with his long passing the other night against Leicester City",the only weakness he has is his pace.

There are others who I like but will leave that for another day.

Just for the record I am not stupid enough to think all players above will make it but IF THEY GET A CHANCE some might go on to do well.

Is Burnett Poch's man then?
John McDermott will have appointed him. Think we would be better off with a younger coach. Ryan Mason perhaps.
McDermott doesn’t get much stick on here but loans will be his responsibility I would have thought.
Brighton have 14 out on loan. Dan Ashworth recently took over there so maybe down to him.

I mentioned it in the transfer thread but Liverpool have a dedicated loan guy like we used to with sherwood.

We need a director of football to put these people in place. It’s just a mess behind the scenes with no defined roles. We know levy is a fan of the director of football model but Poch doesn’t like it. Levy needs to pull rank here and sort it out.
