What is the opinion on Burnett? Incredibly poor season for the u23's last season and after a positive start this season, it's all gone a bit shit. Now I know the u23's is a strange league and pretty much meaningless but the assumption at the start of the season was that Burnett had inherited a decent youthful team this year so something is clearly wrong.
i think the problems go beyond burnett but he definitely isn't helping matters. just one example but if you have tob and maghoma in your team then i don't know how he can come to the conclusion that maghoma's better suited to holding while tob is the one playing off the striker, that goes completely against their attributes as players. if you were to compare tob to a spurs player of recent years then it would be jermaine jenas and i don't think you'll find many fans who think that jenas would've made a good #10. then you have tracey who i'm beginning to think must be burnett's illegitimate son as he starts every single game without fail despite three seasons of absolute mediocrity.
whilst burnett isn't the right person for the job though i do think we need to start looking more at the academy as a whole as at the moment we're not producing well-rounded enough players. 90% of those coming through you can loosely categorize as being neat, tidy and easy on the eye but lacking the physical and athletic traits to be effective at older age groups/senior level. you look at the lads arsenal and chelsea have coming through at the moment and unfortunately they tick a lot more boxes than ours do. it's not all doom and gloom as there are still players there to work with but maybe we need to look at how we're doing things and whether it's still working to the level we want.
going back to the u23s specifically, it doesn't help that cirkin, bennett and parrott have all been missing as they are three of, if not the best three of our excellent u18 group from last season but despite that you'd still expect us to be doing a lot better than we currently are.
Our Under-16s won 1-0 against West Ham in the Premier League Cup this morning. Roshaun Mathurin got the goal and was assisted by Captain Dante Cassanova.
Also, Under-15 goalkeeper Luca Gunter made the step up to the Under-16s and played the whole 90 minutes, getting a clean sheet. He is thought of very highly at the club and is definitely at the top of his age group.
