For the first time in quite a long time, I was encouraged by that performance. Apart from a spell after Carroll came on and Newcastle went long, we were completely in control and never looked to be in any danger of even conceding a chance, never mind a goal.
There is no point in commenting on the clusterfuck that is the new interpretation of the handball law, but you have to wonder why the VAR didn't look at Lascalles's obvious handball shortly before Dier's. There was also a long look at whether the ball that was played in to Carroll was offside. It seemed to me that it was; I was amazed when 'onside' appeared on the screen. So in spite of the handball, there shouldn't have been a penalty, and we were unjustly denied two points.
Tanguy Ndombele is going to become indispensable very quickly. He is pure class and his touches to find players in space were outstanding. Lo Celso is also very, very good. It is a shame that we will probably never see them together on the same pitch for any extended period under this manager.
