For the first time in quite a long time, I was encouraged by that performance. Apart from a spell after Carroll came on and Newcastle went long, we were completely in control and never looked to be in any danger of even conceding a chance, never mind a goal.

There is no point in commenting on the clusterfuck that is the new interpretation of the handball law, but you have to wonder why the VAR didn't look at Lascalles's obvious handball shortly before Dier's. There was also a long look at whether the ball that was played in to Carroll was offside. It seemed to me that it was; I was amazed when 'onside' appeared on the screen. So in spite of the handball, there shouldn't have been a penalty, and we were unjustly denied two points.

Tanguy Ndombele is going to become indispensable very quickly. He is pure class and his touches to find players in space were outstanding. Lo Celso is also very, very good. It is a shame that we will probably never see them together on the same pitch for any extended period under this manager.

We played very well but due to a combination of poor finishing and bad luck we couldnt get that second goal to kill off the match. That's on us. The decision at the end was ridiculous but with the game at 1-0 that was always the danger. We needed to finish them off but couldnt.

Lots of positives to take from the game so let's not have a melt down.

Sure, yes. And btw. my name is both Saint Klaus and Virgin Mary.
It shouldn't be the correct decision but it is (well ignoring the push), and unfortunatly you can't really do much in planning against it. There will be a lot of random penalties this season.

You can like or dislike Steve Bruce, Roy Hodgson and/or even Jan Verthongen. But that trio knows probably more about professional football than all of us SCers combined. And to those of you defending the referee’s decision, VAR, etc.: you honestly believe this has anything to do with principal ideas of the game? Honestly? And you are right, but three professionals with a combined 100 years of experience as professionals in the game are wrong?

The offside check was against Carroll, not Lascelles. Carroll wasn't offside.

I think it’s a shitty thing to knock us for only being 1-0 up. We got fucked by a shitty decision. We win 1-0 every other game then we are right up there. Win is a win.

I'm afraid the rulemakers simply did not think through the implications of the ridiculous change to the law. They wanted to create an objective, mechanical standard in order to insulate referees from controversy. While they may have succeeded in that specific goal, they completely overlooked the fact that the change would bring the game itself into disrepute.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, in reference to whether a jury is capable of determining criminal intent, that even a dog knows the difference between being stumbled over and being kicked. Referees are perfectly fucking capable of judging whether or not a handball was deliberate. Stripping the mens rea out of the law and making it a strict liability offense leads to it being applied in a manner that is wildly, outrageously disproportionate to the nature of the infraction. By cowardly seeking to insulate referees from questioning, IFAB has completely fucking ruined the game. Intent needs to be restored to the law.
What a superb post! Hats off to you, Jay.

The offside check was against Carroll, not Lascelles. Carroll wasn't offside.
They kept drawing lines until they drew one which had him "onside" and then just stuck "onside" at the bottom.

I'm still not convinced his head was onside. If it was it wouldn't have taken them 2 minutes of drawing random lines to establish.

I honestly hope the managers get together next week and refuse to put out a team to play before something is done about this.

...perhaps agree for the players of each side to take turns at kicking the ball at the static opposition's players' hands/arms and just have the match composed of penalty kicks until the 90+ minutes are up?

I am aware of who the VAR was checking for offside. When they showed the lines on the screen it seemed to me that Carroll was offside.

The handball that should have been given against Lascalles was a few minutes earlier at the other end of the pitch.

I’m so sorry to learn if your disability. Because: if you truly are of the opinion that Dier’s movement is “making his body unnaturally bigger”, you cannot ever have jumped in your life. Or done any sports, or movement of any kind, whatsoever.

i don’t have a disability. what a ridiculously stupid way of putting your opinion across.

The ref today (Peter Bankes) is a scouser in case anyone's wondering. And it was the first game he's officiated in the PL this season after he initially got promoted last season (where he only officiated 11 games and not one of them involved the top 4 clubs).

He's also on LinkedIn should anyone wish to air their grievances towards him :cautious:

Not the first time he's been called out by a manager either (although it's Lee Bowyer so make that what you will)

Be better than this.

what’s the source for that summary? I can’t find anything on the ifab website giving any such guidance/clarification. I don’t agree with the law but that summary is just bollocks.

I'll be honest mate I was so angry from the game I just saw it on twitter and shared, I didn't fact check it.

The only thing we can hope for is this absolutely charges up the side and we see a seriously pissed off team against Chelsea. They will obviously be disappointed, but you know they all must be as infuriated as we are.

What's to stop them from doing the opposite and just thinking "what's the fucking point?".

If I was a player these days I'd struggle to motivate myself to play in a game in which the rules are broken, and no amount of effort or ability on my part can prevent my team being screwed over utterly at the whim of complete randoms.

It’s insane that people are blaming the draw on the players when we were 1-0 up. Insane. We had this game in the bag. Nothing to do with the chances we missed. We got fucked by rules. We were much better. If the game finished 1-0 would they be saying we didn’t deserve it.
We were not just fucked by the rules. We were fucked by the rules being applied differently to us as they were to Newcastle. And we was fucked by the incompetent ref for giving the free kick in the first place.
