Can't help but think we have conceded that goal several times this season. Cross from Udogie's side and finish at the back post in the RB/RW area. Something is lacking when we defend these crossing scenarios and they need to be worked on. We have got better in defending set pieces (despite what the media want to tell you) and we rarely concede from high line chances. It's this specific cross and back post finish that has done us in multiple times.

65m Solanke
60m Richarlison
45m Johnson

a lot of money spent on average players.
To be fair Solanke all round game is excellent. He absolutely hounds defenders and has excellent hold up play. He’s a total work horse. I’m sure goals will come but we all know he’s not like a Kane. Different kind of player.

Part of that is that Johnson and Grey both got sucked in to the middle. One of them (probably Johnson who was tracking back and could see everything that was happening) should have picked up Nunes who was very obviously in lots of space.

I thought Grey did well overall considering it was a difficult game for him. He grew into the game as it went on and kept fighting. His second half performance was very good and he held up Nunes very well. He learns so quickly...

Completely agree. He will be slated for not scoring enough by those that don't pay attention, but he brings so much to the team in other ways. Occupies defenders, creates space for others, holds the ball up brilliantly and makes our entire team press better.

I'm not blaming players in particular, but it's happening nearly every game regardless of players.

What I did notice last night was quite a bit of variation from our corners
Yep, this has been a bugbear of mine for a while aimlessly floating it to the far post rather than having a clear plan with dummy runs and blocking defenders off to create space.

I'm sure we do it to a point but it's so nice to see a bit of variety even if all it achieves is to keep the defence guessing

It's one of those no-win situations when defending. There was negativity in the match thread that Gray had left him free at the far post but (as you've pointed out) he was tracking the player making a run. On another day he would have stayed at the back post to cover Nunes and been slated for not tracking the runner 🤷‍♂️

It's impossible to cover every potential threat but I'd rather see players clearly covering one of the options than switching off and just covering random space.

Probably been mentioned already but loved the city fans dancing to ‘freed from desire’ after the game last night. I guess that’s what happens when you win almost every match you play, you just don’t care too much if you lose one in the lesser competitions. They were dancing proper mental too, fair play. Probably the highlight of their evening! Quite different to their online fans who were rather bitter.

With regards to the atmosphere, it was great initially, then fell flat after vdv’s injury for the rest of the half (bar Sarr’s goal). Second half was great, especially the last 20 mins. I thought it would be quiet due to nerves, as has been the case many times at home near the end, but it was rocking. Can never agree with singing ‘oh when the Spurs’ when opponents are taking a corner cos I always envisage them scoring from it right in the middle of our singing, but it worked last night so it’s all good! More of the same on Sunday please.

It’s been Johnson a few times now for sure. He’s always ball watching rather than tracking the man, which I get as he’s waiting for the turnover and then ready to break up the wing and receive an attacking ball.

As I see it we have two options to fix:

1) Train Johnson to track his man better when defending

2) Train the midfield to make sure they cover across knowing that Johnson is looking for the counter rather than getting back to defend.

Honestly was way more concerned when Smith said we've dealt with the corners relatively well. In fact I think that was the one Bissouma cleared off the line. Almost a Sherwood one when we played Liverpool and he said he's not worried followed by a Liverpool goal. Fucking hate when people say stuff like that.

What is the run-down of the injury situation from last night? When I left for work this morning it seemed to be:

VDV - Injured
Romero - Probably OK, tiredness
Werner - Tiredness
Solanke - Knackered
Johnson - Not injured

Any update from that?

Anyone mentioned that was City's first defeat of the season, yes a weakened team but still a result for us. Re Haaland , with so many injuries and only the one striker and no cover (where have we heard that before) no way Pep was going to bring him on to try and save the game.

Yeah some of his hold up work is top notch. I think goals will come for him once our attacking players learn his movement and vice versa

Yep, result for us that they’ve got so many injuries

Pep more than happy to blood some youngsters and bin this one off. Impossible for even them to win all these comps with 8 first team regulars unavailable
