You shouldnt find it odd though, you dont have to agree but there's nothing odd about it. Just calling in "banter" makes it sounds more trivial than it is - if we want to go down that route, we're watching grown men kick a ball around etc etc and none of it matters so why bother watching.

As others have already said rivalries is a massive part of the sport, and I like that we have more rivalries than most every season. Some (like me) don't view 4th as the be all and end all, nor view winning a game vs city in isolation, which we have already done time and time again in recent seasons, as any kind of achievement or special marker that will signify anything more than a one-off win.

So for me, I'd rather we didn't win/draw a game to put our biggest rivals one game away from the league title as i dont value the benefit to us all that much. I don't want their fans to feel the joy of their team winning a league and having a parade, I want them to feel like i did in Madrid after after origi's goal - that's rivalry and there's nothing odd about it.

Not to say that when i'm watching the game I wont have the gut instinct of wanting the team in white to be playing well and scoring goals, but there's an override tonight that means if we do score i will feel somewhat lukewarm about it.
This is it.

it being trivialised as just a bit of banter i think misses the whole point.

i'm not going to tell anyone how to support their team but football is a big part of peoples lives/social interactions and has been for most of their lives and rivalries is a massive part of that.

good on people who don't have to suffer unbearable Gooners or can brush off seeing them being fawned over in the media constantly for the next year and beyond.

i personally digest so much football that for me it is unthinkable them lot winning it.

I will never forget their comments on the champions league final against Liverpool and for that I hope we don’t win this game

I think you’re missing the point though. If you can’t take banter maybe you shouldn’t be a football fan because following a football team is all about banter.

Maybe I'm not explaining myself well enough. What I find odd is caring about hearing what some random people might say for 20 years so much so you want your team to lose?

I would take joy from Arsenal losing out on the league, but my priority has always been and always will be Tottenham Hotspur. I respect people would rather us lose tonight and I understand it, because younger me would probably have been in a similar mindset. I'm just not thinking that way anymore and I don't let what people may or may not say affect my feelings towards my club winning football matches.

This is an online forum and people some up their feelings in two sentences a lot of the time, for most id suspect theres more to it than social media trolls ( though im sure there are some to whom this matters more than it should).

I'd rather Arsenal didn't win it, but I can say by the time the Champions League rolls around next season, I'll have long stopped caring that Arsenal won the league and he gutted we aren't in it.

Clearly the funniest scenario would be us winning tonight and Arsenal bottling it against Everton
This is the thing, people are going on as if us winning hands them title tonight. It doesn't, it just means they have the advantage going into a home game v Everton.

Had Villa lost last night, I'd have been happy enough with a draw tonight and to just roll the dice. Honestly don't see what the big deal is here, its clear that the team have been in holiday mode since the Newcastle game, so the chances of us beating City is low anyway.

City currently have the advantage. So we give Arsenal a 90% chance of winning the league with a draw or win tonight.

only disaster is a draw. give ourselves a chance at champs league or stop arsenal winning the league by losing either result is fine. It will be nice to watch still hoping we win but not really caring if we lose.

It's not about "i cant take it", its about not wanting good things for a team you supposedly dislike very strongly. That's more the underlying point that is being brushed over as "i cant take the banter".

If that result was even in question they would be the recipients of as many penalties as it takes to get them over the line.

I disagree. Arsenal are going to do what Arsenal are going to do. Maybe we stop them winning the league tonight but we can’t stop them forever.
