So WANTING YOUR club to win is the wrong choice? Fuck me.
If you cannot understand why a large portion of fans feel how i do then i can't help you.

I've seen people say that even if Villa had won yesterday they still want to win today, why?

load of high horse rubbish, football is about rivalries, everyone sees things differently, granted but honestly if i felt that little about my rivals i wouldn't bother following the sport.

I never said I don't understand. I do and I have even said I respect it, but to imply people who want US to win are not in the "real world" is pathetic.

If you care more about them than all the power to you. I have Gooners in my life and I will simply just ignore them should it happen. Hell I'll be at Wembley with them on Premier League final day so it would be non stop. Yet I still want us to win tonight.

Ah so you don't think we should follow the sort? Talk about high horse rubbish. I follow it because I love it and I love Spurs. I hate Arsenal. I hate everything about them. I just love us more.

I think you’re being a bit unfair calling it rubbish.

I think rivalry is very important in football but there are different ways that plays out. Us becoming better and more competitive is a better long term solution to our rivalry with Arsenal than wanting to lose tonight’s match.

We lose tonight and maybe Arsenal go on and win the league anyway, or maybe they win it next season. Maybe they win the Champions League next season. We don’t really have a say in how they do long term.

But I think our fans wanting to lose a match when there is still a major prize to play for is potentially problematic for us. It probably doesn’t transmit to the players all that much but maybe a bit of it does. It sends the message that we’re more worried about our rivals losing than actually becoming winners ourselves. It’s the kind of attitude I associate with clubs like West Ham.

I said i haven't met any Spurs fans in the real world (people i talk to/work with/socialise with/friends/customers) that want us to win, not that people are not in the real world. So steady on.

For me, it’s not so hard to understand. You dont support a football club in isolation, alone in the universe. Part of that support, part of the entire culture and feel of a football club also relates to its rivals, hated or otherwise.

I’ve been a season ticket holder for 41 of the last 43 years. I’ve been to well over thousand games, I’ve followed the club to games in at least ten different countries, and even chose a London university so I could still see them. THFC have brought me to tears of joy and despair. So dont tell me I’m not a “real fan”, which seems to be a debate going on in the unreal world of social media.

As i said in an earlier post, its a simple calculation - would making 4th spot bring more more joy than the pain of the goons winning the title, having us hand it to them and then having it rammed down our throats for the rest of our lives. It’s an easy answer, quite frankly. Assuming, we dont win the CL next year, which is a pretty safe assumption to make, in 3 years or less I wont even remember qualifying in 4th.

If some dont understand that, it’s OK. I totally respect your view, but you also have to respect mine.

PS - 7 or 8 years ago, I thought qualifying for the CL with the money and prestige would / could be transformative. I dont believe that any more under ENIC’s stewardship.

It would’ve been interesting to see the general feeling on here had Villa won. I get wanting to win tonight more now Villa have dropped points but will never understand those that say win every game at all costs. There’s always an outlier case.

I personally think it is high horse rubbish, not so much the CL situation as i get that, but the whole even if Villa win last night i want us to win tonight shtick.

I think its far more damaging Arsenal winning a big one in terms of profile/competition for players etc than us playing Europa for one season.

I don’t get this though. Because Arsenal have won the title multiple times during most of our lives. I don’t like it but them winning the title is not going to be this thing that they can dine out on for the rest of their lives. Many of us can remember them winning the title at the Lane!

Spurs first always, this game, yes important as it is just a game if we win so be it if we lose so be it but at the end of the day whomever wins the title deserves it. If we lose tonight we cannot say we handed the title to them up the road. If we lose it is because we were not good enough and City were better. To win the premier league is not about one game its about how you perform over a season.

I want my team to go out tonight and Saturday to their best if we win both games we then have a chance of Europe if we don't then its not about tonight or Saturday.

It would have been typical lines drawn internet stuff.

oh i want us to win every game regardless of whether that one meaningless game results in our biggest rivals doing something they haven't done in 2 decades.

If that isn't pain enough for us not want them to win then what is?

for all intents and purposes us winning tonight is them winning the league at our New Stadium.

I think the thing that would piss me off the most is if the players finally turn it on tonight. That’s the fear. Why couldn’t they do it against Arsenal and actually ruin the title challenge directly. Why couldn’t they do it when it actually mattered against our rivals in the league. If they play like they’ve got a point to prove and we win it would leave a bitter taste after all the opportunities we’ve had in previous games to right the wrongs. Would make it seem like they never cared about us fans and never cared playing against Arsenal, Chelsea etc

And it still fucking hurts that they’ve won it, twice at the Lane in my lifetime, when we haven’t even won it at all in my lifetime…….at all, never mind at Highbury. I remember them winning it 20 years ago - it killed me!!

It cements their position and ours as the junior club in NL. It’s a visceral hatred

I think the majority want us to win tonight but I think it would’ve been something like 20% wanting us to win had Villa won last night. Obviously I’m pulling those figures out my arse.

We lose to city and it's one game, unlikely to impact on where we finish and it'll be forgotten except for arsenal fans salty tears over how we cheated them out of the title.

Win and we are still likely to finish 5th but forever have arsenal fans going on about their potential title win.

If I knew zero arsenal fans, I wouldnt care so much. But when you're surrounded by them, having spent a proportion of your life living within walking distance of the Emirates it does makr a difference.

When I look back at the number of teams who rolled over for Leicester and gave it 110% against us as everyone wanted the fairytale I think f*ck it. Let's treat this game as a friendly, give some of our younger players a chance and enjoy City winning the league.

Us winning or drawing isn't going to make much difference to our trophyless season. Whereas Arsenal winning the title could make a huge difference to them. It would give them more confidence in what they are doing and a new belief to push on. Losing the title could have the opposite effect, having put so much Into this to walk away trophyless has the potential to dishearten them and that would make next season that little bit harder.

So for me I believe we need to look longer term than today and see this game as a friendly.

People shouldn't be castigated for wanting their team to win - that's abundantly apparent - but the overwhelming preference for me in this scenario is that it's far more palatable for us to finish 5th with City lifting the title than us finish 4th and Arsenal win the league.

Nevertheless, just a fascinating set of circumstances and from a sociological standpoint it will be a must watch game even for a neutral.

I don't think so at all mate.

so many have put their tickets up as they don't want to cheer against us but they also don't want us to win.

like i said earlier, i haven't spoken to one Spurs fan in person that wants us to win. Of course the CL part makes in more complicated.

See what I mean? This is a fucking difficult situation and predictably it's created bickering, cock upmanship, judgment and dung flinging.

I fucking said this would happen :sneaky:

Exactly. Under normal circumstances of course we all want spurs to win every game. But these are not normal circumstances, these are deeply abnormal circumstances.
I honestly can't understand how anyone would want a win tonight considering the absolutely hideous repercussions ... there's no hate from me, I just don't get it.

Yeah if they win it they win it. It'll be forgotten about once the Euros starts and then we're into next season preparations.

If anything it shows what backing a manager to the hilt can lead to with a long term plan for the club and squad.

Fuck Arsenal and all, but if you can't deal with some football banter or take it as personally as some look like they will, then they need to look at how football effects them as a whole. Its not healthy. Delete social media in that case because that's where the bulk of this all starts.

I won't be upset if we lose tonight, I expect us to lose tonight, City haven't lost a game for 5 months. They're very fucking good. But if we win tonight it shows Ange building the mentality is working.
