Some good shooting though, they must have been practicing all week - impressive how they all were so close to the goal.
I mean it is impressive to a degree. But if you allow professional footballers the space to shoot from range it's really not a surprise when they go in.

Not but they seem to get a lot of them on target or around the goal, even the goal they scored despite no pressure on him it was well taken out of the keepers range.

Erm. No a CB was sent off. Didn't watch the game, but did watch the penalty shootout. and nothing suspicious about the penalty shootout. I mean it was clear Rio Ave really really wanted it after taking a heavily youthful rotated Milan team to the limit, and being undone by a last minute penalty. But good shootout. The weather was horrific windy wet and horrible, and the players having to watch the madness for almost half an hour.
Was it? I read the #1 was the one who got the card.

number 6 got the card. Like I say I watched the penalty shout out and believe me it wasn't an outfield player trying to cover in goal. But, yes a simple search would show you it was a centre back. looking at the highlight it was also quite clearly a yellow card the player clearly handled it with the intent of cutting out a pass in the box. There is nothing suspecious about the victory, or even particularly lucky. Rio Ave made a poor decision in the last minute than failed to take advantage in the penalties, though I guess they were unlucky in that normally when you score 7 penalties in a row you go through.

btw a fun watch

Get to see our boy Wimmer again :)

I had to look it up. Since he moved there he was relegated with them, sent on loan to the Bundesliga for a season, got relegated there too, then got sent on loan to Belgium where he managed a mid-table finish, and is seemingly now back at Stoke enjoying the local pies where the club are “working to get (him) out”.

I think Levy might have done a little too well with selling Wimmer for £18m, might be why every chairman is now reluctant to take our Deadwood (look at Danny Rose, Gazza, CCV none of whom have a buyer for a perm transfer)

I was looking actively at exactly this and if I had editing skills I could have highlighted many occasions when he should have done this or pressed but did neither. In no mans land wandering about. I sincerely think that he is a very gifted player but don’t understand why he isn’t getting/doing what he should defensively. In several games before this you can hear Mourinho shout at him to press or close down.
Give him time. He’s getting used to playing in a way he’s never really had to before, it hasn’t quite clicked yet.

I was one of those that really wasn’t too bothered if he was moved on, as the last 2 seasons I felt he’d been a bit of a passenger, but if he’s now getting his head down, responding to JM and inevitably improves his all round game, then I’m more than happy for him to stay. If he aligns his undoubted talent with the work rate and mindset needed to get to the top, he can be anything he wants to be.

That nutmeg to set up the penalty was disgustingly good, but that sort of thing needs to be in the right moments, with him doing the basics right first. His last 2 outings have me believing that he’s taking this on board. Long may it continue.

The best in the World get there through 75% perspiration and 25% inspiration.

Getting £18 million for Kevin Wimmer is unutterable genius.

Plus that pass to Bergwijn to set up for Kane's third was a thing of beauty. It looked simple, but it was sweet.

Yes, my point is it might have been too genius for Levy's own good. Now everyone considering buying the players we want to move on is worried about "getting Levy-ied"...

No, of course I take that point. Just still can't quite believe he managed to wangle that much out of Stoke!

I agree with you. I am not saying that we shouldn’t give him time nor discussing his talent.
I am merely perplexed that he does the fantastic things like the pass to Bergwijn and the spin that led to the penalty but struggles to do the simpler things like closing down passing alleys and pressing.
Lucas Moura I would say is doing just that and that is clearly something that Mourinho likes. I really like Dele and I hope he is going to give his all and be a revelation this season.
