My take on the penalty is as follows.

Was it handball? Yes.
Should the ref have given the penalty? Yes.
Was it really harsh and unlucky on us? Yes. Non intentional. No advantage sought. Deflected onto arm from midriff. Happened in the first minute when you might expect some common sense and leniency.
Would it have been given at the other end had it been VVD? Imho, no. Feel free to disagree but I feel the ref would have waved it away, been called back for VAR and dismissed the handball as a midriff or some such excuse. He felt very safe giving it against us.
Did it effect the game? Yes. Liverpool were able to hide their obvious rustiness by playing deep and on the counter. We had nowhere to hide because we had to make the game. Force the play. Find space where there was none.etc
Is the penalty an excuse? No. The really good sides would have turned it to their advantage. I can hear Rio Ferdinand now turning to his Man Utd team mates and telling them in no uncertain terms that this was an attempted stitch-up and that they should channel their fury and make the opposition and officials pay for trying to cheat Man Utd out of what was rightfully theirs. We did no such thing, had no such characters. That is something we will need to find. Consistent winners have that.

So, the penalty pissed me off but it wasn't an unreasonable decision and we failed to use it as ammunition.

Hopefully Poch is thinking along similar lines and helps us rediscover our nasty streak. I miss it and we need it if we want success.

Think it’s slowly sinking on my way home from Madrid that what a big opportunity missed last night. To be honest wasn’t great game neither team played well but felt we just shaded it. The penalty killed the game. For such a marginal decision and in the first minute of a game of the magnitude felt it was extremely harsh.
It was the wrong decsion to start Kane as well should have had him on the bench coming on final 20/30 mins.

Still I think we can look back on this run to final as big positive something that non of us expected at start of the season let alone after 3 games in the group. Really hope Potch and the players use last night as a real learning curve and use it to spur us forward. Much like Liverpool did last year.

As lot of people have said Big summer ahead for the club and in particular Daniel Levy. He has to take advantage of the raise in the clubs profile and strengthen the squad with real quality players. Also not to mess about and leave everything to the last minute as usual. Potch needs time to bed in the new players

We had 90 minutes to get back into it.

We were shit. We played it like a preseason friendly. Hardly laid a glove onto them. Feel sick

There wasn’t a single big tackle in the game from our boys (or there’s in fairness) which told them they were in a final. We were too nice.

I’ve only just faced up to watching it again. I think it’s a pen in the champions league this season and a pen in the premier league next season with VAR. It’s probably not a penalty in the premier league this season but then again it depends on the ref.

There was but there's an argument that if the referee doesn't blow for a handball but it's checked by VAR that they wouldn't have awarded a penalty.

Fairly sure VAR would have given it. Or asked the ref to look at it.

But I'm also fairly sure if VAR had recommended the Ref look at his decision again he would have overturned it. From his angle it looked like it hit chest and arm at same time. On replay and correct angle it was clearly two separate events.

I've just realised an overlooked positive from last night.

If any Liverpool fans now want to shove their fingers in people's faces with the number of European Cups they've won, they'll need two hands to do so. This leaves their scrotums open and unprotected from attack.

Also make them unable to pickpocket, if only for a moment

Unfortunately the laws have been updated since that text.
Read this link which includes your text.
Its ridiculous that you get a penalty now for the ball hitting your arm but it is what it is.
I think we'll see players intentionally trying to hit the arm and win a penalty next season. Will make a joke of the whole thing.

What do you mean we'll see players intentionally trying to hit the arm and win a penalty next season? We saw it last night and it was successful.

I don't see what difference that makes Though? It doesn't make any difference as far as the rules are concerned or it doesn't make any difference to the play in general. The ball deflected of his body onto his arm because his arm was stuck out in an unnatural position therefore its a pen under the current rules.
The only way that ball doesn’t hit his arm after the deflection is if you amputated it

I presume he means because there is VAR in the PL next season and also that apparently the rules for handball this year were stricter in the CL than domestic football. Which is ridiculous. Football is football regardless of which competition you are playing.

I find this revision of the handball laws one of the worst things to have come about in recent years, but I think we’re stuck with it in all forms of the game from next season onwards.
