That is compete and utter bollocks. It hits his chest and then bounces on to his arm. In no way shape or form is that a penalty
...'cause we don't want it to be penalty? Chest? If it hit him on the chest, it would have bounced off him with no arm involved. His arm was raised clearly, and it struck him in the armpit/chest area and he had contact with the ball as he brought his raised arm down. You can whine all day, but it's a penalty.

And Sissoko certainly made himself bigger with his arm extended out fully, regardless of his intention.

If Henderson had done that I'd be screaming for a pen
I wouldn’t, to say he was making himself bigger means he knows the cross is coming in and is trying to block it

Not much we can do with a shit referee like that. He killed the game with a horrible pen. After that Liverpool could play their game, counter attacking. A referee that ref in the slovenian league should not get a final like this.
LOL. He's one of the best referees in the world. I think he could have not given it, but it has been shown over and over this year that situations like that are considered to be handball. You don't have to like it, you just have to accept that this is the way handball is being interpreted now.

The crying shame is that I think this is the end of an era for this crop of players and we have nothing to show for it. This would have capped off our progress so nicely, but just wasn't meant to be.

That's not a penalty. If the ball had hit his arm directly it's a penalty. But it didn't. Sure, after the initial chest/shoulder contact, the ball rolled on to Sissokos arm. Lets pretend that Sissoko had his arm close to his body instead. The initial contact would look the same like it did during the game. So he didn't gain anything from it, like the PSG player against Man U or like Rose against Man City, where they tried to block a shot with the arms far away from the body. It hit the arm directly in those situations. Clear penalties. And that's extra provoking is that Liverpool got away with 2 handballs against Porto, that was way more penalties than this. VAR is a joke.

Really? How long have you followed Spurs? Not followed for all the years where we've never played Champions League football let alone made the final? All the years of mid table and out of cup competitions early. All the UEFA cup campaigns that ended early despite playing pretty average opponents. The times we flirted with relegation.

I honestly feel runners up of the Champions League is the best thing we've done since 84. I was born in 84 too so this is the best we've done in my time following the club. I've never felt better myself.
Since the late 90s. Being shit is a stable low. This is just bottomless despair. It's going to pass eventually, and I'm sure I'll look back at this campaign with a fair amount of joy. But right now it feels horrible. This was our chance. And the ref flushed it down the fucking toilet after 30 seconds.

there is much worse coming my friend. This is just sport.
It's not rational. Having 11 overpaid men affect my mood like that. It's more than sport. It's tribalism. To belong to something bigger than yourself. Having something to look forward to. Football is a drug, a way to escape reality. On days like this, ypu come down hard from that drug. And there's two and a half months until the next fix.

Danny left an arm out while trying to block a shot which by the new rules means he made himself bigger with his arms to gain an advantage. Moussa has his arm up already before it was kicked because he was gesturing to a teammate, if that’s a pen we’re heading down a crazy path
The new rule comes in next season though, but yes it's all a bit silly really. We could be seeing a number of penalties like this one sadly.

As the law is currently written, there's no such thing as "regardless of intention." The law explicitly states that "a deliberate act" of playing the ball is a necessary precondition of handling the ball. Sissoko had his arm raised to communicate with the back line, Mane noticed it and booted the ball into his arm. There was no deliberate act, ergo it should not have been a penalty. That it was not referred to VAR is a disgrace.

Fact is, Sissoko should not have had his arm up in the box.

The point of rewarding a PENALTY - a free kick 11 yards from the goal-line with no wall in between - is to penalize the team that has committed the offence of preventing a goal-scoring opportunity in the box by a deliberate use of handball. For an example - the ball is getting passed to me and I am about to be in a one-on-one with the goalie but a player from the defending team stretches his arm out on punches the ball away. Another one, I am taking a shot at the goal, but the defender being unable to reach the ball stretches his arm out and blocks the shot. That was never the case here. Never.

Gutted, but I look forward to the next season, hopefully with exciting signings.

In other news, I'm staying in the Liverpool players hotel.. they just got home and everyone is singing outside. Fuck that shit

I still don’t think it’s a penalty.

But kudos to Mane for hitting it against him. None of our lot would of done that...

Meh really. It was given, it's done. Nothing to be done now
Still would've lost with our poor performing forwards imo

Our entire gameplan was thrown out the window with the referee's decision. Sissoko categorically did not play the ball deliberately, and it should not have been a penalty. They didn't need to attack anymore and our counterattacking setup was rendered moot. It changed the entire game.

Look at the other white shirts, was any of them trying to make themselves bigger by spreading their arms like that? Vertonghen's arm is in an about the same position!

It just should never be a penalty

Mane kicked it AGAINST his arm chest

I get why it’s given, but it shouldn’t be

After 30 seconds of the biggest game of the season. Woeful decision that ruined the game

FYP.

It hits his chest first.

This is what I can't get over.

If it was chest and arm at same time I could just about understand. But it hits his chest THEN hits his arm.

I can forgive the Ref giving it.

I cannot fathom why VAR didn't insist he review his decision.

"Handball" rule has become something completely different in a few months that what it was for a hundred years.

It hurts, but i feel like it hurts more because of the way we lost and the game being the worst played Champions League final i have ever seen. We are just fans and have no influence, so it’s kinda weird that it feels a bit “shameful” to have your team play so badly in a CL final. Maybe because all eyes are on that game, but the level of football on display was a bit embarrassing.

But i gotta admit that it was kinda fitting the way we lost, because it sums up all our bad games this season. One goal conceded because of a stupid personal mistake and the other goal conceded after a set piece. That is kinda how teams have scored on us. No one can be surprised that the last goal scored against us was after us being unable to defend a corner. So we kinda deserve that one. Maybe we should train that part of the game.

Also Liverpool parking the bus and us not able to score is like deja vu.

Oh well it will be good with a summer break. This team is tired and i’m tired of watching them play, so a break will be good for everyones sake. Lets hope we can come back stronger next season and win a trophy.

Maybe we can start a petition Liverpool style

Just to scatter some ‘happy dust’ on the situation, this also means that our record of being the only English team other than United to win a trophy since the ‘50s is over, marking this as officially our poorest period in terms of trophy success for around 70 years.

I think everyone on this board, including me, built up so much adrenalin-fueled expectation re this game. There are more important things in our lives. This one hurts, but still we have seasons to come. We're better-placed than Arse, Chels, Utd going forward.
