I am one of the first people to laugh at how other clubs sign players and we find it 'too complicated', 'not enough time', 'couldn't quite get it over the line' etc. etc.

However, for all those having a moan about this news I'll just put this out there:

Would you rather we had a world class stadium and great finances and be able to moan about not spending enough

....or...

Would you rather we had a small, out-of-date stadium and crap finances and be able to moan about not having any money to spend...

I'm not here to whine but I'm explaining why this means nothing to most fans or is at worst a slap in the face. We support a football team and are looking for sporting performance. Those celebrating business performance have different aspirations. (Probably shared with Levy).
The evidence suggests that more money = more investment in football = more success.

Reason for optimism

players we could have signed at the right time but did not have the will to push it thru Mallinson Sancho Brooks cheap as chips at the time we were in for them when I say cheap as chips I mean in the scheme of things .
Bruno Fernandes Dybala expensive but doable with the will but no deal . It seems we miss out on players that are prospective great buys but are too stingy to go the whole distance needed to get the signature of these players . There are others but my memory is not what it was due to being an old fart.

At any other club yes. Not with us which is why people aren't bouncing off the wall with this announcement.
We have spent huge amounts on infrastructure. During that time results have steadily improved culminating in the opening of a new stadium and a champions league final.

The only season in forever we haven’t had a major infrastructure project on the go is this one and we have spent money on quality players and a quality coach. More work to be done but there are reasons for optimism.

What results have improved? We've won less trophies unless you count the 4th place trophy? We sacked the best manager we have had in my lifetime as a direct result of not refreshing the squad over the last number of windows and are now in serious danger of regressing back down to 5/6th spot.

Liverpool, City, Chelsea, UTD, Leicester, Arsenal, Wigan, Birmingham and Portsmouth have all won more or at least the same as us in the last 19 years.

From 2000-2019 results steadily improved. You cannot use trophies won as the metric like so many do around here. At least not to disprove the idea that results have improved. By that argument we could have stayed a mid table team like we were in the 90s, won another league cup this decade and we’d say results were better. That’s palpable nonsense.

Last decade we cemented ourselves in the top 4 and played regular champions league football, winning most of our games with attractive football. Thats better than it was 10 years ago and better than it was 20 years ago.

Of course progress isn’t linear. It never is. But the trend is positive.

When we look back in 20 years time and have still won nothing but entry into the lucrative champions league I'm sure we will marvel at the achievement just like Arsenal fans did.

If we slip back down, sure. This is an important phase (delicate even). It’s clear the playing squad needs investment. The revenues posted in this thread and the signings made last summer, suggest that we are willing and able to invest. Let’s wait to see what happens. But the lack of faith is based on vague expectations of the future, not an analysis of the past.

Quite the opposite. Your optimism of the future is based on vague expectations not analysis of the last 20 years.

Lack of faith is based on the reluctance to back various managers at crucial times. We are not talking hundreds of millions here but one or two players that would have made the difference. Most recently we had a great team led by a great manager playing wonderful football. He will never change, yes we may spend more as we will have more revenue but he will never gamble - I’m not talking about gambling the clubs future - and go for it like a Liverpool. The reason we never get off to a flyer in the transfer window is not because we do not have money, it’s more to do with waiting for an opportunity to do a deal. We wait for items to go on sale then lose out because the size we want is not in stock. He’s business acumen is highly regarded but he has a lot to answer for with regards keeping hold of deadwood and screwing up with Eriksen / Verts contracts. Our squad is in the state it is because of him more than anyone else.

Results have trended up over the past 20 years. That is the analysis of the past. It’s true. I am expecting that to continue over a 3-5 year period. This year we will likely do a bit worse - progress isn’t linear. But we’ll invest in the summer and do better again next year.

We won’t lose any major players, get rid of more deadwood, our signings from last summer and this January will hit the ground running and we’ll buy more quality to bed in slowly over the course of next season. Mourinho will have time to get us playing with a particular style.

1. What would you have done differently with Eriksen and Vertonghen and how would that have reached better results? Remember you have an adavantage Levy didn’t have - hindsight.

2. I am going to assume you have no experience with major infrastructure projects. Neither do I. Do you think there are good reasons why we might have been reluctant to spend before the new stadium opened ?

No. A fan ?
Of a business or a football club? ;) I used to be a BSODL as well. I think we are on the wrong side of the roller coaster now. Building the stadium, the Champions league final and almost winning the league will be the pinnacle of this ownership. I realised that when they sacked Poch and by how deflated you could tell Poch was last year.

ok only at the bottom of page 1, not seen it mentioned yet, but according to the link below we are also 5th in the list with the biggest debt, and that figure surely doesn't include the stadium

ITK has stated that Eriksen said he wouldn't re-sign after his last contract, he should have be sold the summer after our last season at the lane (I think I have the timeline right?) His value was probably at it's highest, it would have massively sucked. But a simple statement advising why he was sold would have been all that was needed and then that money properly invested, like Pool did with the Coutinho cash

I’ve been talking about the football. The results have trended up over 20 years. I’ll get excel out if you want some maths. It’s just true.

OK youve got a hunch last summer was a tipping point. Fair enough, I respect that - were all fans who want the best. I’m gonna stick with the long term trends though.

You can decide what you like about dealing with Eriksen as often as you like but as he had decided he was going to move on a Bosman at the end of his contractual agreement . Then what you decide to do is irrelevant as he holds all the cards if he does decide to go this window it is because he must be feeling uncomfortable unloved unwanted and apparently he has stated that he was not happy with the crowds reaction to him on Tuesday . Hopefully this will give him the nudge to move on this jan as he does not want us and all the spurs fans I know don't wan him . For myself I still have not forgiven him for his non effort in Madrid.
