Mauricio Pochettino has made signing a new left-back his priority and Spurs have recommended Swansea's Ben Davies to the new manager.

Stopped reading when they said that "Rose always looks dangerous going forward....."

Nice to see us being linked to a LB as this has to be the number 1 priority over all other areas.

Well they're not wrong, he is dangerous...

To us when he charges forward and doesn't bother tracking back.

Quite like the Davis kid if honest.....and would be better than anything else we have at LB.
Danny Rose for me is NOT LB nor never will be....hes just not good enough for that position as his reading of the game and positioning is poor.
I would be looking to sell Danny on unless hes happy to sit on the bench and cover anywhere on the left side.

As for Ben Davis ....would improve our back line for sure .....and I'd say we've have a good chance of getting him for a decent price.
Is there better out there ...yes,but would also cost more......but we need to improve other areas aswell so ....depending on what we have to spent, not a bad shout.

I find it amusing that everybody in this community is against Rose as our LB. Its quite clear that he just doesn't make the cut, so how and why were we left with him as our only choice LB last season? I think management owes us an explanation. Its not like they never had the funds...

Whoever is the left back, he will have difficulties in tracking back to cover as long as we persist in playing a left-sided midfielder such as Eriksen in a role that permits him to track inside and attack the centre. This was one reason why Rose struggled defensively, having come back from injury to find himself with no cover.

The left back we already have who is visibly more conservative and defensively-minded is Zeki Fryers. Ben Davies races forward when there is an opportunity, which is exciting and sometimes productive, but if he joins us and we persist without a 'proper' left winger, he will have the same issues about tracking back as Rose had last season, because there's rarely any defensive cover on that side.

Walker also races forward when he gets the chance, but he usually has Lennon on his flank and can always trust him to cover. That's why Walker rarely got caught upfield last season - more so than because of any improvement on his part.

The underlying point, of course, is that it's a team game and fullbacks have the most physically and territorially demanding role of any position. Most of the fullbacks, for other teams as well as Spurs, who get individually criticised for their defensive positioning are being caught upfield because they have instructions to attack. When a manager provides a fullback with a responsible winger, it's much less of an issue.

With all this talk of us after players from Southampton, i was kind of quietly hoping that it just might be Shaw, because out of all their players he is the one that we need most and he is quality with it.

I would welcome us matching Man utd's and Chavski's offer and leave it with the player to decide on the club he wants hoping that Shaw would like to continue working with Poch.

I think the use, or not, of defensive midfielders was just as much of an issue. Pochettino favours 2 in front of the back 4 who would cover forward runs by fullbacks. It's a complete misconception that defensive midfielders are a 'negative' tactic popularised by people who see them as hard nuts who batter the opposition in that area. Used properly they provide cover right across the pitch to allow any of the back 4 to get forward. When Roses forward movement was 'covered' by Eriksen and Bentaleb (who couldn't tackle a dustbin) he was often exposed. RB fared better as you say with Lennon tracking back, but Paulinho too was very poor at covering. No doubt we need to upgrade Rose, but I don't think we need a world-beater. Davis is competent with plenty of potential. I'd be happy to have him onboard.

Bit late for that really; let's just get on and replace/reinforce that position.

Ye let the others start bidding, messing him around and then jump in last minute with Poch as the main selling point. Far less disrespectful to Southampton that way and it's worth the outside shot

On the basis that a cardboard cut-out of Justin Edinburgh would compare favourably with Danny Rose, I think that the answer to this question is fairly obvious.

I'm not sure about this, the last welsh left back we bought didn't turn out to be very good...

The cardboard cut-out of Justin Edinburgh owned Justin Edinburgh.

I choose to blank out the 90s. Too traumatic.
