This and also the fact that the striker being tight on the defender is a crucial part of the game. If we're talking these ridiculously small margins then the way a striker plays will be fundamentally changed. There is no way a player can be conscious of being 1cm offside so will have to try and be 50cm onside.

I don’t think strikers will do anything different. It just means more marginal decisions will be ruled out and sadly the benefit of the doubt to the attacking team has disappeared.

Surely they can implement a tolerance level into the technology to ensure such fine margins maintain that benefit?

I think they will change the more these decisions happen. Like defenders now do that stupid holding their arms being their backs in the penalty area. They can't be as mobile because of it.

Not sure if it’s been discussed but how can VAR look at that Gray tackle and deem it not a red? He went over the ball in a stamping motion that raked down rose shin FFS

How VAR is used in the PL is a disgrace imo.

Clear penalties have not been reviewed through out the season, yet spending 5 minutes drawing lines and still getting offsides wrong is happening

The more I see the decision and the way they have all these little damn dots the more pathetic it becomes.

I mean have we really resorted to fuckin dots

You've just got to laugh at how it's being applied this season.
Stupid (I know) to look at this at this level of detail... But... If you look at where the blue dotted line joins the cross pitch line... it's not in line with Evan's shadow whereas the line from Son's shoulder(ish) lines up with the middle of his shadow. If you drop that line another 2 pixels. that blue line moves to the right, beyond the red line.

It's all so so so objective it's impossible to tell one way or another...

Agreed. The problem with the decision is that VAR made a number of errors when analysing it. The above is true, as is the fact that the blue line is not drawn to the furthest part of the defenders playable body part. Taking both of theses into account he is onside.

This has been without a doubt the most idiotic decision I've ever seen in a football match. It's quite obvious that the term clear and obvious means fuck all to those morons at VAR today.

They don't apply the "clear and obvious" standard to offside decisions, with the rationale being that it's a black or white issue so subjective shades of grey don't factor in at all. The issue is that today (and City's first match of the season) demonstrated that there's absolutely no way that the margin of error on the current system is sufficiently small to be chalking off goals over millimeters. They're purporting to have absolutely certainty where they can't possibly be certain.

Then whoever rationalized that is clearly a very ignorant person, simple as that. Anyone who has ever measured anything with any device invented by mankind knows there's not such thing as an exact measurement, so it's impossible for offside decisions to always be black or white. This is one of the most fundamental concepts in experimental physics ffs!

Maybe VAR should be done were the feet stand?
I think this is the most sensible way to do it.

If they are going to draw lines up from different body parts you have players with bigger frames being further ahead than those with slighter builds, even if the feet are level. Lukaku vs Vardy, for example. Lukaku takes up more space so his shoulder will be more advanced if everything else is equal and he'd be offside just by being a bigger person - and to be considered level he can't actually be level.

Or ask for a gap in the blue/red lines. The one yesterday overlaps so it's not clear at all. The red line is thicker than the blue and if there was any blue showing at all then it's considered offside. There is a thin slither. Same as the goalline tech where the whole ball has to be over the line to be a goal, maybe the whole blue line has to be visible.

The technology is 100% accurate. It’s the same in cricket, and that is why they use the on field umpires decision when it is to close to call. Football needs to learn that when applying to the offside decisions

It's not the same when being applied to offside due to the frames per second and the multiple variables involved. I'd be arguing the same if it was Leicester that had that goal disallowed.

Sorry meant not 100% accurate. I just don’t agree with how var is being applied, it should be clear and obvious errors only. It took over 3 minutes and still they are guessing due to the technology. In the mls they apply clear and obvious errors for offside so the decision is made quickly

I think he meant that, if it's so close it's not clear you go back to the referee decision on the pitch.
I still think if the lines overlap it should be given onside as that in itself makes the case it is too close to call.

Was anything made about the penalty on Rose or the over the ball challenge on the touch line. If those happened to a certain few other clubs I’m sure there would of been a hell of a lot made of it. We’re just to nice sometimes.

Basically nothing is going to change until Liverpool are done over by one of these decisions, and that's never going to happen because it's Liverpool.
