IIRC, Baldini was well connected & had a knack for closing deals. He seemed to get them done quickly.
As for the quality of some of those players, it's debatable. Some good. Some not so.
But I don't believe he was the one identifying the talent. That was left to others.

Campos is a different animal.
His "company" id's & closes deals with quality results both financially & on the field.

If he's available, it's a no brainer.

The thing I find with DoFs is that you don't really see the good work they've put in until a few years down the line. We saw that with Comolli and Arnesen especially and with Campos you can see the quality of players

Baldini is a national joke in Italy. Did alright the first time round in Roma, though essentially gave Roma a transfer ban by using underhand tactics in signing players. He did have a good relationship with Cappello and the board and they shared a vision. However, he was considered ineffective in his second stint, and now is back at the club, puppet mastering the operation and seemingly on a bit of a power trip. Now, Baldini, is probably not as bad as Totti, for example, like to say he is. However, if people think Sherwood was slimy than Baldini is no different.

DoF or not DoF, it the manager wants one then great. However, it is something that goes in and out of fashion depending on the time. If it's just for negotiating, fine, but it's naive to think that doesn't already fundamentally happen. If we need better connections to get deals done, also fine, though Jose seems to have those in abundance too

The important thing is everyone works together and is effective as a team. The best DoF's aren't the most connected, the ones who are able to spot hidden gems or anything like that. The best DoF are able to effectively work in a team and have a good and shared vision with the coaching staff and the chairman. In Italy, the give DoF positions to players recently retired and often it's more about connecting the playing part of the game with the board. Negotiating deals, finding targets is now almost always run by a group, not individuals. So there is two ways how to set this up, have a DoF which picks the manager, with the board, or have a manager who picks the DoF. Because if that relationship doesn't work, you make a mess.

ON the plus side COVID will likely have the effects of drastically reducing prices and this will play to Levy's advantage. The market was insane the last few years, and I am personally happy we took limited part in all that, though in the end, that is more by pure luck than any plan.
