Last season is over, we always had the debate about whether we'd rather finish top four and not win anything or finish 17th and win a trophy - now we've experienced both and you can decide for yourself which you preferred.

Now it's time to look ahead, and regardless of what happened this year, the really important thing when determining who our manager should be and what our strategy should be is - what do you consider to be a successful follow up season? More specifically, what do you consider to be an absolute non-negotiable for next season?

For me - I have three bare minimums:

  • Play attractive, attacking football throughout (post-November has been absolutely unacceptable, regardless of results)
  • Minimum top 8 finish - a club of our size should not be finishing lower than this
  • More competitive in the games against top 6 rivals (7 points from 18 games against the top 9 this season is a joke)

I don't expect us to reach the latter stages of the Champions League but I want to see us competitive in the league phase, a few wins and strong performances, not just turning up and getting battered every week. Obviously a cup win would be fantastic but we know how hard these are to win especially now Europa isn't an option this season.

I voted for a trophy. I want the FA cup not that shitty tin foil league cup thing

I think we are capable of top 6, and winning a trophy. A CL run, at least getting to the last 16, would be great.

I also want to see us compete more and get more wins against the rest of the top 6. We need to start beating that lot down the road, at a bare minimum at home again.

Has to be consistent, on field progress and better competition for the top sides

Look at how good sides managed to score goals without ever looking like they got out of second gear - that’s sustainable. They’re not exhausting themselves with one style of football, and they’re not showing demonstrably weaker performances even with some of their best players out. That’s what we should be working towards.

A trophy would be nice, but is noting like as important IMO.

I don’t want to play boring football - it’s not us. However, we have to get back to a mindset that losing isn’t OK. Far too many defeats last year, in particular at home.

Progress on the pitch is a must. Realistically, there are a lot of good sides now - look at Palace FFS, they have some seriously good players. Then you have to say that Newcastle, Villa, Chelsea etc are all some way ahead of us in their progress, and that’s before you even mention the City, Arsenal, Liverpools of the world.

So, top 8 should be a minimum, and a good run in the CL.

Obviously it’s very summer dependent though. Are we going to get back in the CL next year? It’s going to be seriously tough - which tells you that the summer transfers need to be as aggressive as we can possibly manage, as we may well not be as attractive next year.

It all depends on signings. I'm not convinced the first 11 is as good as we need and the drop off from them to their replacements is massive.

We are currently pretty average with no real difference makers.

My minimum requirement is to be in the top five and play attacking football. Preferably, an extended Champions League run would be great as well.
Plenty of work to do for that to happen though.

Never been less sure of our ability and potential.
Are we a couple of signings away from being a top 4-6 side?
Or are most of the squad not quite good enough.
So many players that could be members of a top side or just journeymen.

Top 5-6 has to be the target, with a cup run, but i have no idea how realistic that is, for the first time in years.

Hard to say at this point, depends a lot on playing staff and who the manager is.

Regardless of this season and the abysmal league form, I’ll think that the boys will be hungry to compete and we will compete for the highest honors.

I voted trophy. Once we win the Super Cup in August, we become known as serial winners, so I want them all.

Sack the league off, Ange, win the cup treble and finish 17th again :playful:

You can demand to take cup competitions seriously, bit it's not really something you can set as minimum requirements to win - as too much depend on outside factors, cups are random.

After a season like this I'm not really sure where we are or what we can achieve in 25/26 but what i do know is that we will not have another year like this.
Without anything to back this up would love to be top 6 team again, play attractive football and win a trophy again (to show it wasn't a fluke and because enjoyed being there and celebrations).
However, we haven't been able to achieve that on all fronts for years, so odds of achieving it are remote.

The one thing I do want is value for money on my season ticket. I want to look foreard to going to games and believe in the team. Also want fans who are passionate and support, not just sit there.

I voted top 6 and attractive football (but I'd settle for top half and a trophy). We need to play in Europe. I also need some excitement when I'm watching games.

I want to see flexibility in tactics and approach, depending on opponent and phases of the game.

By all means go out and play attacking, possession-based football against the newly promoted sides at home, but there's no shame in sticking 10 men behind the ball at Anfield for 90 minutes and trying to hit them on the counter.

If I can see the manager being balanced and sensible, I can forgive him for dropping points if our players weren't quite good enough to get the result.

Also, I want us to be more efficient with our resources in the transfer market.

Richarlison, Solanke and Johnson...all decent players and fair play to them for being instrumental in our cup win.

But was that the most efficient way to spend £150 to £180 million?

If in doubt, bring in a few young prospects for the same price as an experienced player and see how they do.
