Agree. Unfortunately his body let him down.

With that in mind you can't blame the club for apparently bulking at the £50m are demanding for Archie Gray...

I think with youngsters, deals would be very structured and incremental.
I’m sure we didn’t pay £25m for Ryan; probably something like £15m then bonuses for appearances, Europe etc.

One of the oddest transfers I can remember. We tracked him for several years and from the moment he arrived it was a total mystery as to why. Had next to nothing stand out in his game defensively or offensively. Technical ability mediocre. Wasn't particularly quick.

But just a very very strange deal all round, in what must go down as one of the worst transfer windows by any club in history, signing Sessegnon, Ndombele and Lo Celso for £130M or so. Negligence is harsh when talking about Ryan. He had a shocking injury which he struggled to recover from, no way the club can be blamed for that.
At the time it was a good signing, simple as that.

On the subject of fees for left backs, I’d argue Reguilon for £30m was a worse deal….
He’s just never been good enough whereas Ryan’s problem was a career-changing injury

He was an outstanding 19 year old with pace and an excellent left foot. Not only was he capable of being coached as a left back & left mid/winger, he’d proven himself as one of the Championship’s best players.

If you’re saying he wasn’t worth signing, even for big money, we’ll have to agree to disagree. I’m convinced without that awful hamstring injury, he’d have been a success.

It did not work out for him here. But I wish him the best as he moves on.

Shame for him and Tanganga. 2 homegrown players off the books too so hopefully the academy can step up. Hopefully they both get good moves but I do feel the pace and physicality of this league is too much for them.

The big issue for Sess was he was one of a few signings made in about 2 years. That put extra expectations on him.

He was one of the most highly rated young players in europe when we signed him. Man U, PSG, Chelsea etc... were all after him but he came to us, mainly because of Poch's reputation for developing young players. Yes, it didn't work out for various reasons, but that's not because he was lacking in talent.

Yes if we'd signed him then it would've made sense. But years later, after watching how limited he was in the PL, it was very hard to understand.

Reguilon was signed as our starting LB and was exactly that until we changed manager. Sessegnon was loaned out to Hoffenheim that season, after being fit and playing in pre-season, which means he was behind both Reguilon and Davies in the pecking order...so considered worse.

Our (and other big club's) interest during the summer after he had excelled in the Championship made complete sense. He then struggled to make an impact on games in the PL, with it seeming apparent (to me and plenty of others) that he wasn't defensively good enough at LB or offensively good enough at LW to cut it in the PL...at least not yet. I honestly think he would have made a better LM, in an old-school 4-4-2, than LB/LWB/LW in a modern system.
It seemed we were one of the only clubs to not cool their interest after his initial season in the PL, which made me extremely nervous when his signing was announced. It seemed like he was signed as a player with general long-term potential, rather than to play in a specific position, at a time when we were in desperate need of improving our matchday squad. It never really seemed that anyone at the club knew what position his development should be focused on.
