So looks like the deal is City pay £50mil for Dias, and Benfica pay £14 for Otamendi. So it's £36mil and Otamendi for Dias... He probably had his head turned by Pep, but odd we couldn't have offered the same deal with Foyth going the other way.

After the ITK this morning starting to get the impression people in football don't rate Foyth at all.

I'm pretty sure it's City rating Otamendi at £14m so that is taken off the total fee, which without Otamendi would've been £64m.

These sort of structures are very often tax and FFP mechanisms.

By valuing Otamendi at £14m they will effectively make a profit against his amortised value, which they can offset against any incoming purchases.

If we make some assumptions: Dias on a 5 year contract, and Otamendi's book value at ~£4m.
The amortised cost of Dias would hit the accounts at £10m per year (£50m / 5 years).
Otamendi has sold at a profit of £10m (£14m - £4m).

Effectively, Man City have broken even on this sale & purchase (but will have £10m per year against their accounts for the next 4 years).

Bet Benfica wish they’d held on another day or so, his value to City went up another few million after yesterday!

Sky Sports News is saying £65m + Otamendi. At this price, I can see why we turned our focus to other options.

Edit: Including Otamendi - still out of our price range though. That's like us offering £40-50m + Toby.

Glad we didn't put all our efforts into this one, sounds like we would have always lost out to City once the Koulibaly/Kounde stuff went off the boil.

Very straight forward needed a player and went in.

We've been told many times we have to work differently

If you forget that City spent 2 months trying to buy Koulibaly, then Gimenez, then Kounde and they were linked with Ruben for 1year at least...
