Wolves manager Mick McCarthy looking to sign Tottenham forward Robbie Keane

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy is looking to take Tottenham striker Robbie Keane back to Molineux, according to the Daily Mirror.

Keane has already been told by Spurs boss Harry Redknapp that he is free to leave White Hart Lane in January, and McCarthy has now sounded out the Republic of Ireland international to help guide Wolves to Premier League safety.

The 30-year-old started his professional career at Molineux when he was just 17 and it is believed that he still has a soft spot for the club.
McCarthy did try and sign Keane on loan last January and was even willing to match his £65,000-a-week wages, only for the former Inter man to join Celtic.

Wolves will face strong competition from Aston Villa and Fulham for Keane’s signature, but McCarthy will be positive they can secure the services of Keane for around £6 million.

Kevin Doyle could also play a big part in any deal, as he is close friends with Keane, having played alongside him at international level.

Lads, I'm confident now Keane is off. Was down the Spurs store at WHL today and all of he's merchandise if now half price.

Ominous signs....

seem to be a good few clubs in for him so we should beable to get a decent fee 7-10mil maybe

regardless we need to get that 65k a week off our books

it must be great getting 65k a week to do next to fuck all like winning the lottery every week, that's not a shot at Keano either just a general observation

Ideally we want to sell him asap in order to make room for a new striker.

Arry already confirmed he is off and the best thing would be that he verbally signs for someone and can leave the minute the transfer window opens

I Don't see how we would loan/sell him to West Ham without already having a deal in place for Parker. because if they won't sell to us or even listen to us, why would we do business with them? makes no sense when other clubs are in for him.

if rumours are correct, he rather collect his pension here than play regularly for Spam

One of the clubs rumoured to be interested was Villa. But today's Guardian says there's been a change of plan:

Houllier is today expected to sit down with Randy Lerner, Villa's owner, to discuss plans for the January window. The club are looking to change their recruitment strategy and will seek to target promising young talent as opposed to experienced players in the twilight of their career who come with big wage demands and have no sell-on fee. For that reason Villa have no interest in signing Robbie Keane from Tottenham Hotspur despite continued speculation.

I think Robbie will find it hard to get a club willing to pay him £65k/week at his age. He may find himself in the same situation as Michael Owen did post-Toon: only smaller clubs lining up to give him a starting place, or look for a bit-part at a bigger one.

I agree. It is gonna be hard for us to get him off are wage bill. At 30 years old and no potential for sell on 5m will even be too much for most clubs.

Might be making too much of this but Ashley Young to Spurs had gone quiet then:

Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier has admitted winger Ashley Young may be offloaded if the right amount of money is offered. With 18 months left on the 25-year-old's deal, Houllier said: "In January the best clubs keep their best players but you never know if someone comes with crazy money." Dailly Mirror.

Keane & Young are both on £50-60k week, win/win as they get Keane & £10m to buy more players we get him off the wage bill and replaced with younger/similar wage midfielder/winger/striker for Champions league push ..............or am I just hoping!?!

With the profligacy of our strikers this season (bale has provided more prem crosses than any other player this season) I thunk Keane should have at least had a chance, just on the basis that the others have just not been good enough.

That said, it's clear he has no future here so we really must sell him and free the space up for someone we intend to use.

Its gone so pear shaped the best we can do now is a loan move to Brum? Good lord Keane has dropped down a few notches huh??

I wish Robbie nothing but the best but for the club's sake I hope he moves on in Jan. to the best place for both him and the club. At this point I really wouldn't care if we got anything for him, just get his wages off the bill and move on and use them for a new striker.

I mean in this economy who in their right mind is going to pay for a washed up 30 year old on huge wages?? Oh wait West Ham is always up for a challenge huh??

He always struck me as a player who just loved to play, I don't think wages will be too much of a sticking point in moving him on.

If anything getting clubs to meet Mr Levy's valuation of him would be the problem. He has to go now, he should spend the last few years of his career playing week in week out not sitting on his arse collecting his cheque like a Jeremy Kyle show star.

Good luck to him, unless he goes to West Ham in which case I hope he has a great season....next year in the Championship.

would rather we sold him than loan him out again, but i guess we get some money from the loan and hope to sell in the summer.
