thought Dele was the best player in the first half - everything good went through him. didnt watch the second half. lo celso can spray the ball around, cant he?

First time I’ve watched us live under Jose and I wasn’t impressed. Absolutely no control of the game it seemed to me. A few counters where we could’ve scored, but generally speaking: incapable off stringing a few passes together, always looking like a mistake was coming, no desire. Didn’t seem like we had the ball at all really, under any control at least.

But I’m always willing to acknowledge I didn’t see the whole game.
You dont have to write the last paragraph. It's obvious you did not watch the 1st half where we played very nice football.

You are right though, absolutely terrible after we scored. Its like watching 2 totally different

I really don't know what game you people were watching.

I thought in the first half we controlled it and created the better chances we were unlucky, or more correctly son and moura struggled to put away the chances.

They had the possession but they didn't really create much (tanganga clearance aside).

The second half we tired but still defended well as a team (aurier blunder apart).

Lo celso was immense, winks did well and it was clear in the second half he was trying to quiet Redmond. Alot of respect for Southampton they played well.

Lo celso 9
JT 8 (although he is not really a lb) and lloris also 8
TA, winks, lamela (sub), 7
Moura, son, dele, aurier, davinson, gedson 6

We are fighting and we are better organised, today our midfield actually turned up and there were some really nice moves (usually involving lo celso)

Southampton didn't deserve to lose and it was an enjoyable cup tie. We are going places. I think we are seeing who the bad eggs are, and they were not playing today.

We need a new CF, a winger (right), a DM and a RB but we are getting better.

Dele was acting like a little girl out there today and if we had anyone better I think he would be dropped.

Moura is not a CF and probably not consistent enough to be first teamer anyway but he works his bollocks off, so I can forgive her him.

Son is off form but still scoring. Alot of positives to take from this performance.

My verdict- sign more argies!

We were being overrun towards the end , some of our players seemed knackered , holes appearing in our defence , we needed fresh players
Dier not enough 2 more needed . Wtf was going on with our left back . Acres of room for Soton forwards to pick their passes .

It was looking better earlier on played some good stuff . Then we got seriously tired . I hear the excuses , number of games played etc , but other teams don't seem so afflicted .

Jose up to date with latest developments in Prem player fitness ? Thought his 'Git the wagons in a circle' instruction (saw him gesturing to players to get back and defend) seemed a bit outdated . We needed to hold the ball to play it out , not get big players to pack our defence .
Get Ndombele out there to calm things down.

MoM Lo Celso 9 , way better than other Spurs players .

Jose just didn't respond to them overloading the right side, where JT was asked to tuck in.

The obvious solution with 20-25 to go was Son or Moura off, Sess on but instead Son was playing left wing back, easily picked off by Remond in particular.

Gio was the shining light. Selfless effort from Fernandes.

Room has to be made for NDombele.

Threw that game away. First half the defense was solid and the midfield in control. We would have gone in at half time a goal or two ahead if it wasn’t for the chuckle brothers up front. Son should have scored but if Moura continues his run he has a tap in at the back post! Maybe I need better glasses but I’ve watched the disallowed goal lots of times and it still appears to me the last touch came off the defender not Son??
Second half for some reason we lost the compactness we had in the first half. Dier(and maybe NDombele) should have come on much earlier and Son needed to be replaced as he was out on his feet. What I found inexcusable was with us under fish, tired players on the field and Dier waiting to get on to shore up the defense Lloris had 2 opportunities to kick the ball long and Out of touch to get him on but didn’t. I think that is really poor game management on his part. Aurier had a good game until the brain fart at the end. He had time to pass or clear it but he’s not alone on our team for dwelling on the ball( or making silly passes) when we are under pressure and defending a lead/point. Remember Eriksen in the Champions League Quarter Final against City. I sincerely hope this is something JM can drum out of them and teach them how to close up shop efficiently. Something Tottenham have never been good at - it doesn’t seem to be in our DNA like being no good at corners?

Forgot to add Lo Celso MOM by a country mile again. Got to be the first name on the team sheet now. Can’t understand why we haven’t yet made his move permanent especially as it saves us money in the long run.

It's taken you this long to realise that? Most of our players gave the ball away plenty today but every time it was Dele, several people were instantly bukkake-ing the thread with monster sized globs of hot spoo
I’ve been on SC almost 16 years, I’d not have survived this long without an inexplicable faith in the mindset of the locals.

Seeing further improvements to our play and shape overall. Didn't last for the whole game but still, we are going in the right direction and with better finishing, we would have scored a lot of goals yesterday.

Maybe on reflection some of us have been to hard on the side. Yesterday was a tough game away at one of the in-form PL sides. They’d scored 2 goals in each of their last 4 games and only not scored in 1 game so far this season. We looked pretty solid, and were both comfortable and dangerous first half (when we easily could have been 3-0 up had Son and Moura brought their shooting boots, and Lo Celso’s shot not brushed Son’s foot in an offside position). We conceded due to an individual mistake, the sort of mistake that has slowly become less frequent under Mourinho after a very poor calendar year in 2019. As Mourinho gets players suited to his system (we badly need a big number 9), continues to weed out the players who are error prone (only really Aurier left now), and gets injured players back (ignoring the longer term absentees in Sissoko and Kane, after Lloris we have Davies and Ndombele almost there), I can see his tactics becoming very effective and us becoming a team that is difficult to beat and has lots of goals in it. I don’t agree with his tactics fully, and as Ndombele and Lo Celso become more settled and influential, think the football will not always be as dire as it has been. Yesterday Dele put a real shift in and was very good first half, and yet a few of us roasted him after the game (partly as he was crap second half on the ball, and partly through frustration as throwing away a game that was won). Maybe i’ll wait 24 hours before assigning ratings in future.

Regards Moura all I can say is how long can a player live off of one Stella game and still be first choice .
As has been said by many before me " he's an impact player " at best the last 10 to 15 minutes . But for me he is not good enough for what we aspire to and I think moving him on is the best option but it seems that managers have a blind spot regarding at least one player and Moura seems to be Jose's blind spot .

I think he messed up. I was shouting for him to put Dier on and remove Son (not Dele) to lock shop before they equalized
Dier was ready to come on for what felt like about 5 minutes, but there was a long delay because the ball didn't go out of play. By the time he was on the pitch, it was too late.

Thought at times we played some brilliant short interchange passing and on another day would have out of sight in this game. Same old problem of not putting an inferior side away. One thing evident to me is that this season we have a left-side structural flaw that is damaging us. Whether we play 352 or 451 the left side is unbalanced primarily because the left side defender (Vert, Tanganga or Sess) has no support from the left midfielder. Both Son and Dele are very uncomfortable working back, as a matter of fact it actually blunts their attacking effectiveness.
I'd go
...................Lloris
Aurier Toby Vert Tanganga
Lamela Winks Lo Celso Sess
..............Dele
.................................Son

or
...................Lloris
.......Toby Vert Tanganga
Aurier Lamela Winks Lo Celso Sess
..............Dele
.................................Son

The fitness issues have been there all season. Something went wrong in preseason IMO. Just look at how unfit Ndombele was despite being with us from day one. I think one of the ITKs suggested there was a change in the fitness staff. I don't think its burnout either, we didn't look this bad last year and that's when we didn't have a preseason.

Jose has had to deal with serious deficiencies in fitness and confidence since arriving, but that's what you get when you take a job mid season. It's why someone like Poch who has high stock will always wait to take a job in preseason.
If the players are running themselves to exhaustion twice a week, then surely their fitness will increase just as surely as a preseason workout.

If they are not up to it because of age, metabolism, injuries, etc then a preseason can not help.

I suspect a number of the players play in pain anyway - Kane, Eriksen, Winks, Dier, Rose, Lamela, (Wanyama certainly) or are worried that something is about to snap again - Dele, Ndombele.

What can you do? You can't train these injuries away. They simply can't play 50+ intense games a season.
