That's the best Winks has played for sometime. A welcome sight.

But PEH was MOTM...ran it. And some lovely progressive zippy passing on show.

Best half of football under Jose. We're looking good despite the officials fucking us.

Yeah very promising signs, Bale and Regulion to come in, Ndombele getting match fitter and thus more mins and hopefully another CB and ST and things are looking very rosy indeed.

man, if people cant see that WInks stitched the team together all game I dont know what they are watching.

If they can't see that Mourinho values him hugely then they are even more blind. As did Poch before.

He's not there to make mazy runs at defenders; or try hail mary passes. He's there to keep us solid and metronomic and to give the ball to the other guys to do the flashy shit.

Played well today.

He did play well but I do think Lo Celso in the same role can do everything Winks does with the more eye pleasing stuff on top.i actually think they’re Berry similar players but Lo Celso is the superior version.

Wouldn’t argue with that. Except I don’t think gio would be as happy to sacrifice his own game as Winks is. For obvious reasons (gio is much more talented)

I guess my thought is that he wouldn’t have to. He coupe do what Winks does and still play sharp passes and drive forward with the ball. Watching him I just feel that, much like Modric beforehand, while he can play number 10 due to his obvious talent, he’s far better in the middle setting as much of the play as possible and orchestrating from deep.

Not that I want to denigrate Winks, who was very good today.

It looks to me like Winks has very specific positional orders from Mourinho - much like Sissoko under Poch. He doesn't break those orders which frustrates fans because it looks like lack of creativity and intent - but pleases his manager very very much because he does what he's told.

Gio I don't think would be able to restrict his game to such a level. And I'm not sure Mourinho would ask him too (could be wrong about that!).

Fucking ridiculous VAR decision aside, that was a very good performance and if we play like that more frequently this season we'll be just fine. Another day and we would have been 3-0 at half time and we wouldn't even be thinking about the handball.

Lloris 6 - nothing to do
Doherty 7 - big upgrade on Aurier
Sanchez 6 - fine
Dier 6 - fine and can't be blamed for the penalty
Davies 6 - did well but a few too many wayward passes
Winks 7 - best game i've seen him play for a while
Hojbjerg 8 - great buy
Lucas 8 - was a nuisance
Lo Celso 8 - now looks like a key player for us
Son 9 - Had he not got injured i'm convinced he'd have scored or set up 2 or 3 goals in the 2nd half
Kane 7 - seems to be contributing more to the team with some great passing but at the expense of us missing some scoring chances

Bergwijn 7 - did fine but we were a lot less threatening
Lamela 6 - looked ok but didn't really do much
Ndombele - 7 - got involved and hopefully as his fitness improves we'll see more of him

Undecided, as I thought everyone played well. Best team performance for ages.

Everyone was excellent. Winks and Hojbjerg stood out, particularly the latter.

Very much enjoyed seeing both FBs pushing up into advanced areas. Doherty makes me feel so much more at ease than Aurier does. I also think Davies played well although it's clear to me that he's looking less and less athletic and I think Reguilon will really give us something special.

Ndombele did great work when he came on, that kid is so good.

Ultimately I could sit here and rant like a madman about the penalty but I won't. We know we should've won this game comfortably but equally 1-0 is a perfectly fine result to win by when the other team hasn't had a single shot on target all game and barely even been in our area. Hugo was a complete spectator for the entirety.

Utterly apathetic about this sport at the moment but I love my club and I'm delighted with our performance overall. Seeing real signs of life now under Mourinho. Onwards and upwards.

I think Lamela made us more threatening. We were playing around their box and playing more forward passes when he and Ndombele came on. I believe Bergwijn was okay but made less of a difference than Lamela.

Lucas moura is just not good enough start for a cl team. Impact sub at most. Luckily we now have bale.

He been average for quite a while. Hardly ever keeps possession.

Can't believe he's kept his place.

Clearly you haven't been paying attention to the form of Steve Bergwijn.
He hasn't really had a run of games though. He's just been a bit part player. We've seen enough of lucas to know he's a limited player.

There's probably a reason for that.

Anyway he should be in for Son so let's see what he can do :)

That was an exceedingly bad newcastle side, that made us look good.
Ultimately it was only lucas who scored, so he gets the award for me.

For all the moaning about VAR, it was the ref peter bankes who looked at the monitor and made the call.
Fans have to remember their enemies, and give them hell the next time, next season.
He can join the list along with Michael Oliver (var ref, sheffield vs spurs) and mike dean who knows what he is.
I thought we made them look really average. Was a good performance by my book . We keep playing like that we will have a good season ... I hope
