To add more depth to my first post that has now got the conversation started.

Yes Dier is versatile. He is strong. He has some skill for a big boy.

But I stand firm in him being a CB being shoehorned into the CDM position because Vic is hurt and Dier has an ego. He can cover but he is nowhere near the level of Matic who was mentioned above. Dier is slow on his feet. He is fast in a straight line. But he can’t turn when under pressure or make lateral moves (yellow card today).

We are stuck with him in the midfield until we get some bodies back, but once Josh, Winks, Vic are back (crossing fingers), I don’t see him getting a sniff in.

Poch needs to be brave in my opinion and test the lineup. You don’t always need a lumbering wall out there that is slow on the ball.
Whether he’s better at Cm or cb is another debate. His yellow card today was nothing to do with lateral movement being ooor, it was a deliberate kick out at a rapidly escaping playing who Aurier had inexcusable let wriggle past him when Kenedy was second favourite every time.

I must have been watching a different game to some of you, Dier clear man of the match. Excellent, especially considering he had to be DM, ball winner and playmaker.

Kane and Eriksen way off the pace, to be expected I suppose.

Aurier is going to cost us this season, just massive gaps where he should have been at certain points, having Sissoko along with him on that side just scares me rigid. He actually playerd well (Aurier) in possession but out of it he is a liability.

Davies on the other side was quite poor as well, but not going to cost us too many points.

Our centre backs are probably the best partnership in the premiership and having a quality sweeper keeper behind them is quality. LLoris also excellent for his reading of the game today.

Dele was bright and rightly was pissed to come off. Lucas struggled to find any space.

A note on Rafa, just a top manager he stifled us today and we were probably lucky to come away with the points.

I agree with all of this. I also thought Sanchez & Vertonghen really stepped up and did their other underperforming teammates a solid with the amount of defensive work they had to do.

I heard a stat after the game, the 15 shots at goal we faced today is more than we faced in any game we played last season. Very telling that we weren't at the races

It's that first season match that comes out either good or bad. We were a bit rusty and shaky. Some flaws that could have cost a point or two today. Kane is still vaccinated for scoring goals in August. Had a quiet game. Lucas too
Aurier and Sissoko; I'm gasping for air when involved. I'm sure KWP would have done far better than Aurier today. Poch seems content with Sissoko holding down a place in the XI. I personally would have substituted him with either Son or Llorente

Cool that Luke Amos got his first cap. Hope to see more of him

If Trippier from the World Cup comes back in that form then we have to go with 3 at the back. His final ball can be so good and his set piece delivery is better than Eriksen’s . Not quite sure if the 3rd CB should be Toby or Dier but I guess Dier has to stay in DM until Wanyama gets back. It would help if he plays next to Winks rather than Sissoko. Hopefully Toby will stay committed . His performances against West Brom and Leicester last season did not look that good. Poch has to rebuild bridges there.
Hugely relieved that we still have Dembele and he played exactly the role I have been advocating. Generally starting on the bench and coming on when we need to shut down the game. Lamela too will make a difference. I would still go with him over Moura who may need to show what he can do coming from the bench and in the League Cup . Though with Son and Lamela out he maybe gets in by default.

Yellow card was Auriers fault. He should have tackled but did nothing meaning Dier had no choice but to take the player out

The problem of being stifled was an issue last year and the year before let's hope this season we have found the code.

The start of this season is going to be a bit hit and miss for lots of teams because of the World Cup. We had so many players in the late stages which probably explains a poor second half. Fulham shouldn’t cause us any problems. ManU looked a bit meh yesterday.
I do wonder if Poch might need to send Kane on holiday for a couple of weeks at some point. He just hasn’t looked the same player since his last ankle injury.

Absolute nonsense about Dier as per usual in here, thinking he's gonna be dropped or sold anytime soon it purely wishful thinking, he's one of Poch's Leuitenants and there's a reason he plays so much so you better get used to the fact that he's gonna be around for a long time I'm afraid.

I would argue that if that was Kante, his agility would have put him directly in line with a clean tackle whereas Dier had to reach or kick out as you say. His lateral quickness is not good and I don’t think that is even a debate.

Agreed Dier played well.

We def got tired I would not read much in to the game, lots of injuries, and players who are in pre season.

I don't care about ratings so I'm just saying. I thought yes some things went awry, but Sissoko had a pretty good game.

Auier through him under a bus, he had to do the foul, not sure Kane would have got there.

There was talk in the transfer window that Poch had a vision for the center of the park. There was talk of a 433 or something else that would bring Eriksen permantely deeper and possibly Dele deeper to play alongside Vic. I think that should be the model and think Josh and Winks give a nice balance to Vic’s destroyer mentality.

I phrased that wrong though cause you are correct. He is a Poch fave. He is always in the team. So I should have said, “if I was Manager he wouldn’t get a sniff in”.
