Brilliant if we can discount the penalty does that mean we got the 3 points then.

As a central defender it’s easy or a lot easier anyway when your sat that deep so I’m buying it was great performance from Sanchez and Dier they were pretty industrial on the ball as well with plenty of aimless clearances. I want to see a defence that can defend the space behind them comfortably, calm on the ball, move the team another 20 yards up the pitch and take the game to the other team because we’ve got players in the midfield and attacking areas to do that.

Lost the ball stupidly a couple of times, especially in the direct lead up to their ‘second penalty’ which was completely avoidable

Agree, lloris was shouting at him at one point and ended up telling him to calm down

Lloris - 8 (MOTM) - save from Martial stunning particularly

Aurier - 6 - such a mixed back
Sanchez - 6 - ok, gifted Rashford first half chance
Dier - 7 - v good apart from mistake for pen
Davies - 6

Winks - 7 - v busy, ran hard
Sissoko - 7.5 - excellent second half

Bergwijn - 7 - superb run for goal, tired in sec half
Lámela - 7.5 - held ball up well in first half
Son - 6.5 - didn’t really threaten

Kane - 5 - clearly off the pace

Lo Celso - 6.5 - hopefully ready to start the next day
Gedson - 5.5

Overall, I thought we were ok - better shape and discipline than before the break. We’re never going to boss possession under Jose.

Long, long break or not, that was yet more of playing decently enough for some of the game, but not being able to put together a 90 mins (or as close to it as possible) performance and also physically last the pace.

The first half went well, it was a disciplined display across the park. We allowed them to the halfway line, where they met a solid unit with everyone in behind the ball restricting space and opportunities. This left United reeled in, totally exposed high up the park with a lack of pace and organisation defensively, and we showed urgency to counter attack and get at them. It was a shame we didn't always use the considerable space available as best we could, but Bergwijn scored a good goal and we found ourselves 1-0 up and this was deserved as we were far superior in the tactical and gameplan battle.

This is the 'attacking' version of Mourinho's football. A medium block and then rapid interchanges/counters against an exposed opposition. It's what all his teams have done, especially what his 'attacking' Madrid team did. We've shown glimpses so far that we can counter but the aim going forward will be to more ruthless, more efficient, more accurate with the quick interchanges and do more damage to teams. We're not polished enough yet.

The second though was more like the bad version of his football, the one he gets slated for. From the whistle we dropped off 15 yards when engaging them, and quickly it became defending around our penalty area. Just trying to hold onto what we've got. We just don't have the outstanding defensive operators to do it and soak up so much pressure, the unit will at some point fail, or an individual will have a lapse, and we're seeing that the vast majority of times we cant hold out. And then you have knackered players not getting behind the ball and defending with 8 or 9 with no out ball. I could see it coming.....

What annoys me is that we didn't get forced back by United, we consciously just decided to sit back and soak. There was no need to come back out and do this when we were playing well enough, we should have continued and adapted if needs be as the half unfolded.

So yeah, game management I didn't like in the second half and would query a lot of what Mourinho did. Keeping on Kane and Son and so effectively playing half hour with 9 men was also burying his head in the sand pretty much. I'd say there were two issues and that I'd have changed - 1. Stop being so passive, have some bollocks and step up the pitch and engage them at the halfway line again, and 2. Replace and find fresh legs as runners on the counter attack as Son/Kane/Bergwijn ran out of puff, against an exposed United defence pushing on even more (they had one centre back on the pitch for a time remember). We just needed to strive to go back to what was working.

Not having Alli and especially Moura doesn't help, but for Jose to say he had no options is bollocks and shouldn't be accepted. With a few subs I can construct a line up of Winks and Skipp sitting in midfield, Sissoko pushed to the right, Sessegnon to the left, and Gedson and Lamela run as long as possible (then go to Lo Celso) as the more central attackers. That might be a drop in quality, but it is a unit all capable of getting in behind the ball and doing defensive work, and has plenty of runners who can get forward in support of counter attacks - maybe not with, but definitely without the ball. It would have been far fresher than what we ended with. That's a solution I've come up with from my armchair as an amateur onlooker, I expect a bit more from someone paid gazillions of pounds.

We need to see more of the first half performance and mentality, and fuck loads less of what we reverted to second half.

Lloris mom, i was clearly watching a different game

Hugo made one really good save, the Martial shot.

If he let anything else in then I would have been disappointed. Both Rashford and Bruno's shots were straight at him.

I know De Gea let in a goal from a shot that was straight at him, but this is different.

Thought Dier and Lamela were very good and I'm particularly pleased for Dier who's been through a very rough patch. The pair of them led by example. Dier was unlucky with a really soft penalty but shit happens. Horrible tactics from Mourinho though to back off and back off until they got their break. They were there for the taking in a crucial game and we surrendered 70% of the pitch to them which gave them confidence they didn't deserve. Hope it's not a sign of things to come. Thought Sanchez did pretty well too.

I gave Dier MOTM. I thought he was imperious throughout and was very unlucky to give away a soft pen. If he can play like that regularly we won't need to worry about buying a new CB for a while.

Very decent performances from Sanchez, Lloris, Winks, Sissoko, Lamela and Bergwijn too.

Im giving it to Hugo, that save was pure quality, that save was immense not just regarding the skill/ability but also how it kept us in the game

Hugo pulled off a few great saves. His early one with his foot from Rashford was good too.

I thought Lamela was our best outfield player first half. I also thought Winks was good too, some clever quick one touch passes under pressure.

After a second watch, maybe Sissoko’s second half, he deserves a pat on the back too.

But playing Harry for more than 60mins was awful, he was completely ineffective, and an hour would’ve been enough.

Hopefully Spammers game we’ll see some more options up front.

Really pleased to see Dier play like that. I seriously doubted we’d see him looking that strong again.

Eagle - Hugo
Birdie - Lamela, Dier
Par - Winks, Davies, Sanchez, Stevie B, Sissoko
Bogies - Sonny, Harry, Serge, Jose

Mourinho 4??????????
Why?
We were organized, and had a plan which if not for a softish penalty would have brought us 3 points. Manure may have had more possession but except for the Loris save we were rarely troubled. That’s because the manger had them organized and following a plan.

Because a plan to surrender 70% of the pitch for that long, in a crucial game, at home (!) is shamefully negative. If they'd been all over us and we'd nicked a lucky goal, maybe, just maybe it would have a bit of merit, but that wasn't the case.

Did we run out of puff in the second half or was it Mourinhos fault for sitting too deep and playing Gedson and GLC wide midfield?

really disappointed not to see nD given GLC and Dele both not starting.

Winks, Lamela, Aurier are all doing their best but do not do enough to be first choice in a team with top four ambitions.

Lloris, the other defenders, Sissoko and Son all played well as did Stevietill he flagged.

Hope we make the Europa, to keep the big squad busy next season...
