It wasn't a coincident that our two goals came as a result of one touch football, something which we had not done all game. Was not impressed with this performance but glad for the result. With regards to Davies' performance "The stone that the builder refused, turns out to be the head corner stone"

A dreadful performance overall, but we looked completely different the moment Kulusevski stepped into the pitch. Has to be him imo.

Was going to say that Fraser Forster was terrible, but had enough saves to probably be our best player.
However, Kulusevski played ball for 5 minutes towards the end so must be him.

Kulu MOM easily.

im not a fan of playing players out of position. Play Gray in midfield and start Spence at Right back.

could’ve rested Udogie and played Reguillon too but this manager really is stubborn.

fucking abysmal display and dog shit lucky to win, but I’ll take it.

Hee hee.

Robbed them. I’ll not complain about resting players for games like that, we should be good enough to beat Cov with three or four regulars and some backups. I will complain about how absolutely shite that looked for so long.

Forster - 5 - Curate’s egg of a performance, but with more bad than good. He’s a good mascot, just not good enough for our #2. Give him a slight pass because it’s his first game in a million years.

Gray - 7 - some nice play defensively and going forward at times with Johnson.
Dragusin - 6 - decent, needs to be quicker with his passing at times.
Davies - 7 - couple of good interceptions, did Ok.
Udogie - 6 - mediocre by his standards, too hesitant to go forward, did not mesh with Werner at all

Sarr - 5.5 - covered a ton of ground, didn’t do enough with the ball, should be taking these games by the scruff of the neck and just…didn’t really do that at all.
Bents - 6 - similar, bit more progressive but something just isn’t right in the midfield.
Bergvall - 6.5 - some nice touches and good use of the ball, not really penetrative at all.

Odobert - 5.5 - NET really, some flashes.
Solanke - 6 - just didn’t really get into the game enough. Not sure I’d blame him for that.
Werner - 4.5 - oof. These are the games where he should be tearing teams apart. Terrible decision-making, not progressive enough, not clever enough, not good enough. Loan is up in Jan, right? Think that’s probably for the best. Hate to scapegoat someone but he was so frustrating.

Subs: Johnson - 7 - did better with Gray, not as Incisive as I’d like but had a couple of chances and basically did everything right for the winner.
Spence - 7.5 - would be more but he switched off a bit for the goal. Good play going forward, terrific effort for his goal, very encouraging.
Maddison - 7.5 - busy and ultimately effective.
Kulusevski - 8 - MOTM, sadly, changed the game and finally someone played good balls and took up good positions in the final third.
Son - 6 - meh.

We need to get on a roll - that’s so important. Maybe this is the start. It’s just structurally failing right now. We should be able to put out a half-strength team and at least play better going forward but the final third was just pathetic. Some of it is the players, some of it is confidence. It just feels like - once again - if everything clicks we’re amazing but if one thing is off we’re simply not good enough.

Green kit - 2

Lucky not to be added to the list of kits which bring back painful memories.

Kulu by a distance. Spence did well, and Maddison at least looked like he was trying to make something happen (and played a good ball round the corner to help create the equaliser). That’s about all I can come up with

Yeah Kulusevski. He has received loads of negative feedback in this forum over the summer but he seems to be our catalyst and is integral to the way we play. I would say he is one of the most important players in the side, even though many people would not have him in their first 11 or if they did he would be in a variety of positions.

I think Ange was either stupid or arrogant to make so many changes today and we were very lucky to get a result. Hopefully this result can galvanise us to go on a good run of performances and results now.

Not all green kits have painful memories, though.

It’s not stupidity or arrogance, it’s a recognition that you can’t play the same players all game every game. Don’t criticise him for that, criticise him for failing to get the 11 he did start to play better. They should be good enough, The fact they weren’t isn’t all on Ange. Werner was terrible, Forster was erratic, the team didn’t play well in front of the defence. Some of that is on the players, some is on Ange.

Liverpool won the bloody thing with three or four regulars and a lot of squad players. We need to be able to do the same.

I went for the quiet man. ben Davies. The ever dependable pro. Calm and assured at the back. A key hero like block. Top performance.

Followed by the impact kulu had.

Thought spence looked great going forward.and was a menace in the box at times. Wanted to make it happen and linked well with Maddison. He's not great at lb though, lost a man a few times.

Johnson. Boy is bereft of confidence and rightly or wrongly ignoring fans and not celebrating won't help I don't think. Is it a Social.media thing? Or.a real world one? As away fans are a different gravy and I doubt they'd be posting shit about him on the cess pit of social media? Anyway. It wasn't great from him again but a few good moves and a well taken goal. I'm really willing him on to do well.

Didn't really get what Ange was doing though. Gray, Spence out of position. Take off solanke and bring on Maddison.... Leaving Werner on. Etc. weird decisions.

But a day light robbery result and through...

Forster, Davies, Drag - 5/10, first game of the season and it showed
Werner - 3/10, words fail me, I know he’s a confidence player but come on that was pitiful and I thought he would be a useful addition pre season. Can’t even group him in with the above.
Sarr - 5/10, going backwards, not too sure he fits this ‘system’
Gray - 5/10, not his natural position and hopelessly caught out for their goal
Bergvall - 6/10, looked okay
Solanke - 6/10, ran about a bit
Maddison 7/10, started to make things happen
Spence - 7/10, showed some proper determination and a great run & finish.
If that would have been UDog some would be saying he’s the best LB in the world.
R. Bentancur - 6/10, definitely not the player he was 12 months ago, great ball in for BJ
BJ - 7/10, great run and finish. Part of me is thinking we could have saved £65m and played him up top in this formation and got a winger Ange wanted.
Son - 6/10, going through one of his cold spells
Odobert - 4/10, totally ineffective
Deki - 8/10, say no more, needs to play through the middle. I keep banging the drum but he just reminds me so much of a young KDB.

Ange - 6/10. Only because he changed it up when he did.

Spence showed a lot of determination and wouldn't give up. Hopefully that has registered somewhere. Kulu really got things going for once, just wish he could do it more often. Pleased for Johnson with a very composed finish.
