i was all set to give lolris 1/10 for a quick snifter, and turning up. Then i saw his choice decision.
Llamela, Moura .... Im always impressed at their hunger.
Winks is one for the future if we keep blooding him.

The rest. meh. bedtime for me.

I don’t blame Poch at all. Thanks to Levy he has a threadbare squad. Maybe it would have been better with 3 at the back since once we went behind our full backs were charging forward like kamikaze wing backs anyway. But who knows if that would have made any difference ? You can’t legislate for first minute blunders like Loris made.

The truth is that Messi had the freedom of the park especially when we were chasing the game the whole time. We don’t really have a player that can man mark him anyway ( not many in the world who can ) and without the Dembele of 2 years ago we don’t have the ability to bully the opposition like we used to. Especially since Wanyama doesn’t seem to be the player he was either and Dier goes from bad to worse. Thanks again Daniel for not fixing that obvious issue.

Good fighting effort in the second half. Not a disaster given our limited squad size. . The disaster happened in Milan. Reality is that of course it was our ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in Milan that will probably push us into the Europa , not this game.

Lamela, Moura and Kane did very well in the second half when Davies got into some good attacking positions and Winks had a good 20 minute spell that looked encouraging. Toby gave everything but without Jan was left with no support at the back.

Not the worst perfomance we had a slow start to the game as usual and central midfield was bascially non existent in the first half. Barcelona are the second Euro giant i have seen us play and lose to at wembley and what they do so well is game management throwing themselves on the floor and drawing silly fouls from us to waste more time. We did better in the second half and feel like if we had eriksen and ali things might have not been so bad, COYS

Kane MOTM for me. Made things happen almost every time he touched the ball.... has a great eye for a pass when drops deep. Kind of wish he would stop dropping deep but he creates things and invariably starts threatening attacks so it's all good.

Barca players looked at each other and giggled when Sissoko came on!
Could have been a different outcome if it wasn't for Lloris..... The fucker!
MotM. I'll give it to Lamela.

One big positive from the game was Winks’ 30 min second half spell where he was immense. Need him to build on that considering our huge need for CMs.

Wanyama looked well off pace, we improved once Dier came on.
Trippier can’t defend and Lloris was horrible.
Son looks exhausted, Lucas and Kane good overall.
Lamela clearly MOTM and considering our injuries we did very well in second half to give them a game.

Barca are next level though, best team I’ve seen us play live. Messi will be the best player I’ll ever see play live, that Arthur looks hell of a good young player too.

In which SC becomes blind after a good 20 minute spell to end the game.

Wrt Kane, I agree he's starting to come back into his usual self and he scored a great goal that was vintage Kane. But come on. He loses it when he tries to do entirely too much and starts playing deeper than the AM 3, which happened quite a lot today. Hence, a 5.

Wrt Trippier, anything above a 1 is absolutely preposterous. He was worse today than he was last season against City where he got skinned by Sane no less than 30 times(a performance he's come close to matching that quite a bit so far this season). But today was the worst ive seen him. He is not a good rb in a back 4. Just awful from him today. Hope this was his rock bottom.

We were not as crap as most were making out in the Match Thread melt down. We have played worse this season and have won (Manu for example). I think conceding the early goal threw a spanner in our game plan

The ref was consistently bad IMO so it evened it self out

Lamela my MOTM

Sissoko :(
I dont think we were worse against Man Utd at all, we seemed happy to let Messi run at goal more than 2 or 3 times whilst just trying to cover some angles

Id say Lamela was great second half but not that great first half. Same with Kane. Both stood out though. Why did Lloris rush out - wankpot

We tried we had endeavour but unfortunately theyre just too good. Arthur was just sensational, never even heard of him but fuck me he was unreal.

I agree with Tripps - Barcelona saw him as a weak point and they constantly attacked him. Aurier whilst has his brain farts, he would have give them something else to think about and kept them occupied. He offered nothing and unfortunately is so predictable.

The commentators were raking Sanchez over the coals all game. Wonder if that impacted my view of his game cos the ratings here have been pretty good for him.

I thought that was one of Son's worst games for us. Get ball, head down, lose ball. The one time he passed we actually got a goal.

Thought Wanyama looked more mobile and Winks grew into the game.

Lloris, hope he's not driving home.

Lamela and Lucas were great.
Nope, I was at the game and Sanchez looked shit there as well! He had an absolute shocker.

Application was very good.

I don't blame the player here.
Application was good in between missing getting a third and at the end missing a simple pass allowing Messi to score. So, had he scored and blocked that pass to Messi, it would have been 3-3. That's why I mentioned sissoko

Just back from the game. Completely agree with all of this. We improved a lot when Diet came on. May be coincidence, but he shored us up in the centre and kept possession much better than Wanyama, who was poor. Pamela was the absolute standout for us and Kane looked back to his best. Lovely goal and full of running, even when the crowd disappeared after #4

But that Messi, eh? Just sublime. How people can compare Ronaldo to him is beyond me. His touch, vision, positioning, range of passing - unbelievable. Priveledge to have seen that.

It was part credit to the opposition, part credit to us for at least dragging ourselves back into it, but also quite a big part lamenting what we did and our ability to shoot ourselves in the foot.

The lineup, considering who was available, I couldn't quibble with too much. I'd have played Rose (but I always thought Davies would come in for this as per the usual rotation), and also Dier alongside Wanyama, and tried to block the centre of the pitch and play on the counter. But it was much what I would have gone for.

However, from the first whistle what we instead did was to come out and commit large numbers to the press. Rather brave you'd say, and, instantly, made to look foolish. Their first attack sees them comfortably play their way past our attacking quartet, then bypass our cm2, Messi gets it in time and space, his through ball ties Trippier in knots, and then Lloris gives his recent '2am pissed up drive around London' a run when it comes to decision making, an open goal is presented, and within 90 seconds we're 1-0 down. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

The rest of the half was basically Barca outclassing us. They passed and moved better than us, crisper and quicker, they even pressed and harried to match this slickness with the ball, and eventually cut us open once more and with a great finish went 2-0 up. Now there is no shame in being outfootballed...... However I thought we were quite desperate and headless chicken in our efforts and it lacked any cohesion. We had players individually charging about trying to press, but being a yard or two slow and just getting taken apart with ease. Lamela was the only one able to get in their faces, people like Son and Kane weren't pressing well at all, Moura is getting dragged inside covering for these two in particular and Barca switched it past him constantly, the cm2 and the likes of Trippier are then desperately charging about attempting to plug impossible gaps. It was all a bit of a mess, and did make things easier than they needed to be for the opposition.

At the start of the second half, lets be honest we could have been about four or five - nil down. However, and I'll get the caveat out of the way that Barca did probably lose a bit of their edge/focus and slacked off a tad, a great goal from Kane out of the blue lit the touchpaper and we had a better intensity and across the park had players pulling their weight. For the majority of the second half we had more players able to get at them with the press, get a foot in and nick the ball back. We eventually even forced them back and enjoyed a bit of the ball and kept going until the final stages and showed our battling qualities and a lot of heart.

However we did still manage to shoot ourselves in the foot and undo the hard work of dragging ourselves back into contention in the game. The third goal looks slick but Messi arrives unmarked/untracked, the final goal yes is in the dying stages where things are a bit desperate, but it was a series of poor decisions and then turning over the ball and conceding a silly looking goal.

We gave them a good game eventually, there is no shame in losing, but a sense of frustration for me too in amongst it with some of what we did. Hopefully we can take some of the more positive aspects from tonight - the intensity and pressing effort as a collective in the second half - and, ally that with some more quality with the ball, and show that more regularly in the coming weeks. Still searching for our best performances/efforts so far this season.

Lloris - If Poch was showing faith in any way by reinstating him immediately, well that was barbecued by Hugo within 90 seconds, wasn't it. Was exceedingly lucky not to concede another spectacular error, and this was yet another big game meltdown really. Captain Fantastic.....

Trippier - First half was, bar a couple of cute passes, turned inside out and was badly exposed for the opening goal. As with many of them he improved and found things more comfortable as the game went on.

Alderweireld - Didn't look too convincing for the first hour, but did save us two or three times.

Sanchez - Another goal where he completely loses his marker.

Davies - Meh for the most part, improved a bit later on and got forward a bit.

Winks - Struggled and completely overrun for the first 45-60 mins, different player in the latter third of the game and hopefully takes confidence from this.

Wanyama - As above, the cm2 struggled but they weren't helped at all by our headless chicken chase the ball. He did fail to track Messi for the third goal though.

Son - Pretty poor game. Pressing in particular wasn't good enough.

Lamela - Tremendous effort. First half basically the only effective press we had came from him, still led our efforts in an improved second half as a collective. Earned his good fortune for the goal and it was no surprise he ran himself into the ground. If only some of the others had his intensity from minute one.

Moura - Some thoughtless pressing first half and needed to be smarter. Sporadic moments with the ball but did at times threaten. Needs to work on his runs and movement.

Kane - As with Son, pressing wasn't good enough first half, and caused knock-on issues. Improved substantially both with and without the ball in the second half, and scored a good goal to drag us back into it.

Subs:
Dier - Came on when we were in the ascendancy, but I thought most of his actions in the game showed up as too slow.

Sissoko - Poor for the 4th goal, so slow and didn't come towards the ball. He'd already got away with one panicky back pass in our half before that.

Llorente - n/a.

Not sure Sanchez was anywhere near our worst players

Wanayama was like a dog chasing a car out there. Effort but absolutely no positioning or reading of the game. He was so so off the pace.

Two glorious fuckups bookended the match.

Lloris with his inexplicable wander and Sissoko thinking that if he leaves the ball the person right behind him is obliged to do the same.

Positives, Kane scoring a Kane like goal.

Winks showing a spell of his best self.

Lamela at his gladatorial best driving us on.

Negatives. Trippier, poor defending and a lot of ball watching with no awareness of movement off him.
Son, headless chicken.
Wanyama was blowing out of his arse after about 20 minutes and often caused Winks problems.
Moura, has plenty of desire and drive but at times a little composure is required.

Sanchez and Toby did not look a good partnership especially when Sanchez was on the left. Jan is so important to us. Maybe Davies could do that job (as he does for Wales) of LCB if Jan is out for an extended period.
