Any chance you could add a MoM poll to the thread header?

I thought everyone did as well as they could have done (barring Gomes' mishap), but in the end Real Madrid were better than us.

In the autopsy of the two legs I think the basic conclusion should be that we were beaten by a better team with better players than we have. Playing for 80 mins with 10 men in Madrid didn't help either.

All of which I hope puts the following in the proper perspective...

I think Harry Redknapp's reached his level. The thing I omitted from the list above was "Better manager".

We had a mountain to climb and it was completely unlikely that we'd do it and almost unreasonable to hope that we might, however to put out the completely expected as Harry did last night was to utterly live up to a manager like Mourinho's expectations.

He knew exactly how to play against that team, there were no surprises and he had his team prepared so much so that they dominated from start to finish.

I remember Jol switching us about a few years ago against Chelsea and completely throwing them. He stuck Lennon in the hole and we were 3-0 up before Mourinho had a chance to change it about at half-time.

From Redknapp yesterday we got absolutely eff all. Stick the wingers on the wings, put Modric and Huddlestone in the centre... etc etc.

Redknapp's right, the game is essentially simple and players need simple instructions, but when you've got two top teams tactics make a difference. Mourinho isn't successful just because he's had the best players everywhere he's gone - if that was the case then you wouldn't even need a manager - he's successful because he can put out an Inter team which one week can nullify Barcelona and the next overwhelm Serie A minnows.

Like I say Redknapp's reached his level...

I agree. QF of the Champions League. That would put him in the top 10 managers in the world.

Give it a rest. That isn't even relevant to this thread. People said he reached his level when he won a cup and got in the top half with Pompey. I am sure you predicted that he would move to a club like Spurs and get us into the top four and then get Madrid and get beaten comfortably, albeit in extreme circumstances. Did he reach his level by telling Crouch to get sent off.

Support the team and manager that got us to enjoy this CL campaign and stop this stupid witch hunt.

Defence was pretty solid I thought, took the howler to really trouble us.
Huddlestone back is great news and once he regains his match consistency he will be a massive plus in the run in.

We're still toothless up front.

The engine is ticking, but there's just not enough finishing.

A little harsh, tell you what though, agree with you on Mourinho... and the guy has been more than respectful to Tottenham, think he genuinly likes the club... who knows, next manager (when HR goes to England)?!

Dawson, Gallas, Lennon and Bale all had good games. Dawson my MOM.

We were good in the first half. Their goal and Rednapp's rather baffling substitutions took the wind out of our sails.

I do think Redknapp's ability is relevant and his performance this game is of interest, but obviously not the only issue. His substitutions were rather difficult to fathom, unless of course Lennon and Modric were injured or needed resting.

Don't fooled by Mourinho's so called respect. Machiavelli would be proud.

Why don't we have a poll you can vote on any more? If someone tells me how to set one up i will do it.
We gave it a good go and played some good football. Over the two games- not to take anything away from RM who are obviously a top team- nothing went for us at all, as we saw with the pen decisions here, Jermaine's header etc.
All played well and apart from the obvious in Bale and Daws, i would single out BAE. Watched United the night before and Evra is a decent full back but BAE's performance last night and particularly the way he made space for himself when under pressure, was on a higher level.

What was wrong with the substitutions? Lennon had been unwell and by the time be came off the game was lost, 2 up top gave us goals on Saturday so why not? Modric coming off was sensible as it was just to get him off while fit, he is worth more to us for our run-in than an extra 8 mins in a game we are losing 5-0.

Huddlestone started badly but grew into the game, effort wise everyone gets a 9 bar bale who didn't stop running all night.

Pav should have scored the header especially and would hopefully have done better with that chance but it came quick and sat up. Lennon did well and had the full back in knots, bale was fantastic and modric was good but not great. Dawson did very well against adebayor

I don't think he'd come to us, but he was definitely respectful. He was 4-0 up and still put out players that were in danger of being carded and banned for the Barca semi!

Here we go....any word not 100% positive re Harry , even just after losing 5-0 and you're engaged in a 'witch hunt'

Anyway , thought Mods was extremely quiet for both of the Real matches....5 . Hudd rightly got subbed 5 . Bale was brighter 7 AL is still not back to devastating best (getting worried now) 5.5..Where has action man VdV gone ? 5 . BAE disbn better 7 . Daws did well 7. Pav tried 5.5

Harry ?...between them the Court case or England job mean he's only gonna be here a short while...early preparation for this eventuality an essential for Levy ....not convinced by the Sherwood option , the place needs new ideas and freshening up imo .

Sitting with a group of neutral fans ,they felt that our players were not making enough movement to help create space and opportunities for the man on the ball ...coaching problem  ?

You lot are a bunch of mentalists, the first 4 of 5 posts in this thread are embarrassing.

Overall it was a good performance from the lads, we played some lovely football, should have had 2 penalties in the 1st half and had a lot of cut back crosses that just didn't quite find the right man.

On the whole I was proud of how we played and don't think anyone had a bad game.

Gomes - 5

Didn't have much to do overall but his clanger speaks for itself, such a disappointing way to end the competition, he HAS to learn to concentrate more.

Charlie - 6

Did ok overall, made some decent overlapping runs, played some decent passes but basically has no final ball in his arsenal and cannot beat his man, unlike Walker, who beats his man like a winger.

Gallas - 8

Excellent. Didn't put a foot wrong and defended superbly all game.

Dawson - 9

Largely faultless.

Ekotto - 7

Defended well but for me he still attempts too many hacked long balls that don't find their target.

Lennon - 7.5

Could have been a little more involved at times but retained possession well, made some good runs, showed excellent pace and a great cut back for the Pav chance that he blazed over. A good showing overall.

Hudd - 7

Some wayward passes but also tackled back well and intercepted passes a few times starting counter attacks. Looked a little rusty but to be expected. Glad to have him back.

Modric - 8.5

Superb as always, absolutely everywhere, tackled back, drifting past opposing players with ease.

Bale - 9

Never stopped running, amazing heart, Ramos clearly didn't enjoy his evening and resorted to blocking him off and fouling most times. Final ball decent but not always the targets there to hit.

VDV - 7

Not really sure what to see. Played some nice through balls but not enough stamp on the game. Drifts too deep leaving Pav isolated. Looked better when back in midfield after Defoe came on. Unlucky not to score with his curled effort. Sometimes runs around like a headless chicken though and loses possession too often when dithering on the ball.

Pav - 7.5

Thought he worked hard, looked far more interested than he normally does. Touch was sometimes excellent but sometimes loose. Didn't have enough attempts on goal though but would look to continue to play him going forward. Him and Crouch together could work well.

SUBS

JD - 6.5

Hit the post with a back post header, tried his heart out, another good effort from range. Held the ball up as best he could but clearly still trying a little too hard. Fans need to get off his back (especially on here) been a stop-start season, still our most lethal finisher when on form.

Sandro

Not really enough time to do anything, made a couple of nice tackles, great player.

Niko

Not really enough time to do anything

It's completely relevant to this discussion, or should I start a separate Match Rating Managers thread?

Actually...
