Racist abuse in our stands, we need to face it if it’s there.

Anyone heard it? I have to admit it but I’ve heard abuse against Irish, which I am, well Northern Irish, anyone there tonight? Actually ashamed tonight, why do we lose our heads against these arseholes, time after time?

I’ve been going pretty regularly since the early nineties and have sat in the south, east and north stand. I haven’t heard any personally

I was in the South and didn't hear anything but I'm probably too far from the incident. Gotta say, I've not heard anything racist at Tottenham since the 90s. If we called him a ***t, nothing wrong in that. But not having racist shit. No way. If someone did then find them and ban them for good.

When my 12 y/o gets back from.a day out with her friends she is going to ask me if we won.

I'll tell her and she will associate Tottenham with racism.

She will remember racism, not the club statements afterwards

I haven’t been to a game in a year or so but I would have no problem going to a steward and pointing it out, we are better than this shit. If Rudiger says he heard and seen it I believe him.

I'm in the Paxton. We presumed the announcements were for the Chelsea fans. I was surprised to hear it was from our fans. I've been going for years and haven't never heard any racism.

I'm not ashamed or embarrassed, because I take no responsibility for the behaviour of 60 odd thousand other football fans, who I haven't and will never meet, just because we support the same team.
In the same way I dont feel embarrassed or ashamed to be English when England fans decide to kick off and smash up whatever city England happen to be playing in...they don't represent me, just like the racist Spurs fans don't represent me.
I'm not going to be embarrassed or ashamed by association...this isn't like the Chelsea/West Ham support where they have entire stands hissing at us, this is a handful of cretins.

What surprises me, is that some people seem actually shocked that we have a racist element to our fanbase...every single club does, it's very naive to have thought we were different.

I’m not surprised but we should take a collective responsibility, sorry doesn’t work that way for me. It’s not good enough to say *oh it wasn’t me^.

Why should I be responsible for something that I haven't done and I find abhorrent?

I used to be a steward for around 7 years in the east stand ( I pay nowadays to go to games) and I’ve heard a few things over the years. Our own fans used to shout things at Lee Young Pyo. It was pretty shocking.
Honestly though it has been a lot better over the past few years so I was shocked today.

Fair enough, but I don’t think that the way to solve this problem, I’m from a country where we have been saying “not my problem” for 40 years and it’s got us nowhere.

I did’nt hear anything sat in the West Stand, but if there was anything racist, then the perpetrators need to be banned for life.

It's not a shock, every club will have their fair share of idiots. I've said before more than once, for instance, that a few years back when I did quite a few away games I heard quite nasty racist abuse (primarily against Adebayor and Gallas) five matches in a row. And any match I go to you will hear comments that are either borderline or quite clearly out of order. I haven't experienced any coordinated or larger scale pockets of abuse from a big group of Spurs fans, but the isolated idiots are there, always have been, always will be.

The whole incident was pretty close to me in the East Stand South Corner, but not close enough for me to hear anything. I saw the bottles being thrown and heard booing obviously.

At first I thought Rudiger has just mistaken booing for monkey noises etc, but sounds like it was actual chanting.

Disgusting, but unfortunately football attracts total morons and there are plenty at the ground. Some are just moronic, some are racist and moronic and an even smaller amount are racist and moronic enough to actually do stuff like this.

Mate I understand where you're coming from, but this isn't Tottenham's problem, it's not even football's problem...it's society's.
If there was no such thing as football, these racists wouldn't just suddenly stop being racist....they'd just find another conduit to channel their hate.

What's needed is much harsher punishments (if it's grown adults), not crappy stadium bans.
If it's youngsters then education is key.

What do you mean "if it's there?"

Every club has this. It's nothing to do with football or sport, it's to do with a certain subset of the general population all across the world being morons. In isolated cases they are able to present their terrible views on a bigger platform, ie today vs Rudiger with millions watching across the world. Chelsea fans themselves are no stranger to racism as we all know.

All you can do is be as harsh as possible and try to educate better.

As fans you can point out the idiots doing it and get them embarassed/caught. It's up to the authorities (police and sport governing bodies) after that.

If you watch Sky you can see exactly when it happens and the section of the crowd which is right in the corner. No idea if anything was actually said.

They should also be able to pinpoint the idiot who threw a coffee cup at their keeper.

At the Ajax game last season, a man in a row behind me in the South Stand racially abused their goalkeeper, Onana. One guy on the same row and myself both turned around and confronted him and signalled the stewards over. They swiftly ejected him and I presume issued a ban. We offered to give our details for any inquiries etc.

I remember at first people around me seeming annoyed we acted that way, one even remarking "that's not the way to deal with it", which is obviously fucking nonsense. They did apologise to me after and said we were right but it seemed the people around me during this instant would rather ignore it to avoid the confrontation.
