if we cannot Get players from the dutch, german, belgian league or Championship that would improve us significantly on RB, LB, CB and DM then we have a terrible scouting system.

This does describe the purchase side of our winter market, I think. We have the firepower to compel most teams across all leagues to sell, in these relatively low cost positions, and we are no longer trying to upgrade on players at the peak of their powers in arguably the PL's strongest first XI.

Improvements on peak Walker or Wanyama were always prohibitively expensive for us. But upgrading on Aurier, or a first choice DM, in Dier, who gets dropped for two matches in a row because his flaws aren't redeemed by his defensive ability, definitely allows us to shop in our financial comfort zone again. We can target talented prospects who we intend to appreciate in value but who are a little too rich for the 14 EPL clubs with half our turnover or less.

Buy in january seems like the only logical solution:

1. Our current XI isn’t good enough for top 4.
2. If the players bought needs time to settle and make an impact, that would be the same for the summer - so why not do It now? At least they would be ready for next season.

I don’t buy the argument of «january is hard to do business»:

if we cannot Get players from the dutch, german, belgian league or Championship that would improve us significantly on RB, LB, CB and DM then we have a terrible scouting system.

We most likely have the worst defence in the league and top 2-3 attacking front.

Be brutal to the players not good enough and Get rid: Aurier, KWP, Sanchez, Dier.

I’d even consider sales of Verthongen, Rose and Winks.
not news at all

The concerns from dropping out the CL are real and fair I think.

It'll be much harder for us to convince the Ndombeles etc.

However, it would be a good opportunity for the club to get in touch with what made this team good a few years ago. Signing British players who have good potential, players who we started scoffing at (Brooks, Maddison, Perreira, etc).

Liverpool had to drop out the CL to really refocus their transfer strategy.

IMO we don't need to chase the big names, what we REALLY need is an excellent strategy in place. Firstly, get Lille's recruitment team and have them and Jose work together. They've got a good relationship and will understand each other. Avoids having a Mitchell/Poch situation.
Levy wont change his transfer strategy whether we get knocked out of top 4 or not. He’ll buy nothing in January, maybe sign someone early in the summer, leave the rest until the last 2 days then will scramble to try and get 3 in before the window closes

The longer this goes on the more embarrassing it is 3 games against Brighton Norwich and Southampton ,should be minimum 7 points ideally 9. Somehow we’ve severely struggled to get 4 , very worrying

Went into the Christmas period needing a win vs Chelsea to get into the top 4

Ended up taking 1 point from Chelsea, Norwich and Southampton. Liverpool up next and city in early feb. This race is over

I’ve been positive about us getting top 4 but now I’m joining the “we aren’t good enough” brigade. Without 2/3 new players this month we aren’t going anywhere. Europa League max.

The only thing in our favour is the form of our rivals.

We'll be lucky to get Europa at this rate with City and Liverpool coming up and injuries to key players.

We're literally fucked.

Wolves just lost to Watford, Chelsea blew two points at Brighton and I wouldn't be surprised if United drop points at the Emirates tonight. It's a continuation of Jan-May 2019. There's only two clubs in the PL (City and Liverpool then, Leicester and Liverpool now) who you expect to get win every week. No one else can put any kind of run together.

I know Mourinho has stated we wont be buying any defenders in Jan. But unless that's the least we do, top 4 just ain't realistic.

it never was realistic. the teams above us are so much better. we are too reliant on one way of playing. we are predictable

well, it’s going to have to change if Kane is out for any period of time. I hope Mourinho and his coaches get their thinking caps on and come up with something or we luck upon a good formation.

And will likely continue to do so. The half-decent PL teams have gone to shit or the shit PL teams aren't that shit anymore.

Probably the latter.
