The statistics show that the top clubs benefit more from poor refereeing decisions than the lower clubs, it probably isn't that referees are biased to the top clubs but it may be that they feel an extra pressure on them when making a contentious decision involving them so they come down in their favour, very likely without even realising it.
The plonker referee who gave the penalty against us at Old Trafford some years back did exactly that, he made the decision that it was a penalty based on the assumption that the United player must have reached the ball and therefore must have been fouled, in reverse his assumption would have been different.
I'd like to think now that we are challenging at the top we would get this benefit of the doubt now, our second penalty against Liverpool last year wouldn't have been given if we were still mid table even though it was nailed on, but VAR may redress the balance if used properly.

I think this is the case, but also this potentially shows how VAR may get a bit silly, as it's not impossible that they may feel even more pressure to 'see' something in slow mo that in real time was innocuous. Some of Salah's dives have had the merest hint of physical touch and it would be no surprise to see a ref post-rationalise something that in the flow of play was never enough to send him tumbling.

Obviously you have to have some mental toughness (if not ability) to become a ref, but I'd definitely put poor decisions in favour of big clubs down to pressure rather than a grand conspiracy. Given we've also had matches against smaller clubs who have rabid fans where it's seemed like the crowd were reffing, that seems more likely...

fair enough mate. it's just you mention conspiracy and all of a sudden you're a tin foil hat wearing lunatic who lives in a cupboard under the stairs wearing a string vest lol. i just don't know what else to call it, it's so common now for us to be talking about these decisions in almost every game, it's way beyond coincidental as it's so regular now.

Isn’t it just because you are watching out for our competitors getting decisions skewing the sample, and the fact that they are the ones giving the referees the most decisions to make?

was thinking the very same thing and yes, there's definitely an element of that in it but i regularly watch highlights from all the games, not just those involving the top 6, and i can probably count the contentious decisons across the whole season on one hand for the so-called smaller clubs. cardiff as we know have been royally stitched in the past few weeks but outside of that i'm struggling to recall the next one of the same ilk that we see the scum, liverpool, chavs and united get regularly.

At least we can cross off the ' nightmare scenario' of Utd winning CL, Chelsea/Arsenal EL (whilst still leaving us with the option to be their nightmare scenario at the moment)

so, Brighton will have all to play for next week. Hopefully, in their case, it may even play into our hands as they are not known for opening up much.

Considered this but I think they'll play their usual tight style as every point could be vital. That said they have a terrible record in 2019 and we have more than enough to beat them if we are on it.

I think a nervous Brighton is definitely better than a free flowing relaxed one. They probably need 4 pts and will try and scrap a draw and hope they beat the one winnable home game forget who it’s against Newcastle I think.

I don't understand that mentality, if you're asking the question. Even allowing for the fact that you've said that your position is contingent on us qualifying for the top 4, what if Chelsea or Arsenal finished in 3rd whilst we finished in 4th? I struggle to comprehend the thinking of a Spurs fan who would care more about Liverpool winning the league than whether Spurs manage to finish above our local rivals in the table. I just don't get that.
You don't understand it cos you don't have an older brother and all his mates who all support Liverpool!

Honestly, it's not beyond us to win all four after the City game. Three of those at the new home, and one away to Bournemouth.

If you said to me this morning which game I’d like to win it would be this game 100%, but now I want to beat them so bad on Saturday and end their 2 trophy chances in 2 games ,would be unreal and extremely satisfying

the trouble is we won on aggregate because of last week, and have made progress. the match itself we lost, and something tells me with another injury we might feel a backlash. it would be great to get any points on Saturday, but think we have upset a very angry lion

Obviously I want us to try our best in our remaining league games, but we should now 100% - no, 10000% - be managing our squad with the 2 games against Ajax (and - whisper it - the potential for a CL final) as our top priority for the rest of this season. We've never been this far in the European Cup in our entire history and we might never get closer to winning a Champions League title than we are right now, so while we shouldn't just disregard the domestic schedule, we should gear the rest of this season to make sure we are in the best shape possible for the CL semi and make our plans for the PL around that priority.

Winning the Champions League just once would make me happier than qualifying for it for the next 50 years on the spin, and I want us to be focussing our efforts on giving ourselves the best possible chance of doing that this season when we have this fantastic opportunity potentially in our reach.

I wasn't alive, and you definitely wasn't, but you need to read the Spurs history European Cup Semi 1962 we lost 4-3 on agg

I'd like to see City win the league - because they know it will be hollow with another CL disappointment. And, I'd like to see Liverpool get knocked out of the CL and go trophyless.

I reckon we could quite easily get stuffed on Saturday - I won't be happy but I won't be outright distraught as it is the last PL biggie we have to play.

One way or the other the business end of the season is in play now. The team won't be demoralised by a loss
against City in the PL and it shouldn't affect the remaining games (I hope)
