I suspect the clubs involved in fight for 4/5th will demand some clarity ASAP. Take us for example what if 4th looks like it’s gone but 5th is still on cards with 5 games left. Then due to fixture pile up we have to prioritise games. Clubs need to know where they stand for all sorts of reasons.

We'll get clarity over the next week or two based on what happens regarding Man City's appeal. Not for our sake but because the rules will stipulate what happens based on appeal and if punishments are suspended or not until a hearing.

We will know what the situation is in no time at all I feel. It's too big for the outcome to be a grey area, even if City appeal and win their case.

I think it would be silly to assume anything other than the status quo until the process is over. We need to play it as it was before, get 4th so we're nailed on. Then if we do get 5th then we might be in for a lifeline. It would be ridiculous for the club to assume 5th would do it at this point.

As other people have suggested, City's immediate objective will be to ensure they're in next season's CL. They've got a better chance of doing that by dragging out the arbitration process than try to get UEFA's decision reversed in the next few months and risk losing.

There's no viable way for City to do that. CAS can hear things very quickly if need be e.g. doping incidents in the immediate build up to or even *during* a tournament. They can very comfortably deal with this in the 5-6 months they have (exact timing dependent on the result of the League Cup Final - if Villa win they'll be the team playing Europa qualifying regardless so a decision wouldn't be needed until the CL Group Stage Draw on the 27th of August, if City win the the team playing will depend on the appeal outcome so a decision would be needed 4 working days before the UEL Second Qualifying Round 1st Leg i.e. 17th of July. And yes, it has been left that close before!)

Good to know.

Having read more about this, it looks pretty damning for City to be honest. They could well face a significant points deduction from the Premier League now which could take them out of top 4 contention anyway. Either way, I would be very surprised to see them competing in next seasons Champions League.

I reckon* the points deduction should be applied from the outset next season, it'd have much more of an impact. If you take 20 points off them this season then... oh no, they can't get into a competition they're already banned from.

* based on nothing more than it's how I want it to happen

I wonder what they'd do if they get a points deduction this season. Surely if they did they wouldn't appeal knowing it counts for nothing now but a delay could see it roll into next season but if they didn't how that would be used in their court case against UEFA

On 538, we're suddenly up to 43% of finishing in the CL spots. Arsenal have soared from <1% to 2%.
And even though there's a team below them, Arsenal have a higher chance than that team of being relegated. Wonderful.

(presumably it hasn't updated properly after the early match but whatever)

But if they get excluded erroneously, it could cost them £100m. UEFA leave themselves open to being sued to kingdom come. I guess CAS will have to hear the case ASAP, but it will still go to basically the day before the season starts, so whoever comes 5th won't know what's happening all summer.

If my memory is correct, when teams have taken cases to CAS, they have always served the the first part of the ban and usually had it reduced. I would expect something similar, they'll be banned from next seasons CL and have the 2nd year suspended, however I would then expect the PL to take action and give them a points deduction for next season, which could make CL qualification for 21/22 almost impossible, again I don't recall any points deduction given out half through a season?

Ive been reading more and more about this... we all now int he spirit of things that Man City have been funded but technically the 'sponsors' and Man City are two separate entities no?

Also I do find it strange that there has been no independent judge and jury so to speak rather than being both that Uefa have been in this situation.

I do think Man City are guilty we all know it.

Surely what city have done is akin to what saracens have done in the rugby. Paying mancini via a 3rd party is pretty damning. Will be interesting to see the full extent of their wrong doing. From what little ive read ive also seen that they tried to hinder UEFAs investigation and were not forthcoming with stuff. If that's the case then a points deduction i dont think would he sufficient unless we were talking 40-50 points. A 20 point deduction would mean a possibility of still finishing in the top 4 based on previous seasons. If its as serious as suggested relegation should be an option that is considered. As they have ckearly flouted rules and bended them with a complete disregard and over a very long period not jist the last couple of years. How thats effected the landscape of the prem cannot be underestimated. They have pushed up prices/wages for players. We have lost Walker for instance due to an unfair playing field. To deduct them points sets them back a season and is not a just punishment if as suggested they really have just abused a system. The fact the league has rules regarding 3rd party ownership and image rights being owned independently of the club there could be a whole host of things to come out from this. It will be an interesting watch

In case somebody didn't say this earlier (forgive me if so), I am EXTREMELY glad it was Chelsea - repulsive entity though they obviously are - rather than Man City who beat us to the title in 2017. To have been done out of it by a bunch of cheats would be unbearable even now - and as a Leeds fan I said this to earlier replied, would be corrosively bad for Spurs in future, a la Leeds themselves losing to Bayern in 1975 and Everton not being allowed compete in Europe as champions after Heysel.
