I genuinely think there's a fair chance Qatar 2022 still won't happen. One major factor - no leagues so far have started making changes to their schedule to accomodate it, or discussing what they're going to do. If they were sure it was happening, I expect we'd be progressively starting the season a week earlier each year or something so that a World Cup sized gap could be created in the middle without just not having an off-season in 2022 or something mad. And trying to make them actually suspend their programs is going to be a major fight - you can be sure the Premier League, for instance, will be looking at whether there's a legal claim for compensation considering the damage to the TV rights value etc.
None of the European leagues will start adapting for it until the season that starts after Euro 2020. All regular domestic and CL/EL campaigns between Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 will be heavily disrupted with all sorts of changes to create an 8 week period in November and December 2022 where they fit the world cup in (including pre-camp and a week or two for recovery after) and then it will be back to normal after the summer of 2024.

Well if it does go ahead in Qatar mid season there can be none of the usual complaints of player fatigue due to a lack of winter break. The players should be at peak fitness.

I can’t believe a single European country voted for them on this basis. Surely it buggers up leagues across the world too.

I’m hoping it’s a complete failure personally. It’s ridiculous we haven’t hosted it since 1966.

Platini is the fall guy so everything can continue as before at FIFA. Until FIFA is brought under control by a government so much money floating about unchecked will continue to mean corruption will be the order of the day.

Qatar promised in their bid that they would be able to host in the summer, had all sorts of ideas like how to air-con the stadiums so the temperature at pitch level would be 25 degrees at all times. But none of it was feasible and they should've been stripped of the tournament the second they admitted they would have to host it in winter. It was never in their bid.

But corruption always finds a way.

It was months after they awarded them the WC that the decision was made to move it to the winter. When the voting happened the proposal was still that it would be played in the usual slot.

I wish I could believe it but there's been several moments where clubs/nations could've got some momentum going regarding a boycott and yet they did absolutely nothing. If the leagues themselves were going to kick up a fuss surely it would've been back when it was officially announced that it would be a winter WC. As far as I can remember the PL etc. just said it's not ideal but we'll have to work around it. It doesn't make sense that they'd go along with it this whole time and then all over a sudden now decided it can't be done.

Ive said before and I'll say it again, if nobody boycotted it when:
  • It was first awarded to such an unsuitable and nasty country, especially given how blatantly it was the result of corruption
  • When all the corruption started to be publicly exposed
  • When it was announced that the tournament would have to me moved to winter due to the completely unsuitable conditions in Qatar
  • When the truth came out about the slave labour being used to build the stadiums and evidence of workers literally dying during the process
then it's simply not going to be boycotted. All of these were moments where it would've been fairly easy for a group of the big leagues/nations to get together and say they were boycotting it, but nobody did anything more than mumble under their breath about being "concerned". I'd love for it to be boycotted but if that were going to happen it would've happened already

Good to see the Ghanaian guys got their money back.

Not convinced regarding the bribery or the fan experience, but at least they are on record promising certain things.

I didn't think the worker's camp was that bad. Looked like a Butlins, except for the tiny room. Having lived and worked in Oman, I expected it to be a more temporary looking tent city or shanty town.
