I know you're not sticking up for them Baz (y). Why wouldn't they pay more than they have to? Lots of countries have a fair minimum wage. And a lot of the workers who've travelled over there have been lied to about how much they earn. I'd love to know what their bid said about how they'd pay for the stadium.

My feelings are that everyone should be paid a decent wage. Enough to live fairly comfotably, feed yourself and your family.
We could do it but capitalism says no. Instead we have 42 people who are worth the same as 3.7bn poorest. Cheers.

We're introducing a winter break next season.

It's not a true winter break like other countries have though is it? I can't remember the exact details but I thought it was basically a staggered system where each team gets a week off but not all at the same time, so it doesn't massively help in terms of the WC situation.

I think we should look at something a bit more innovative than moving the season's dates - causes a lot of issues and means very little rest for players. For instance, we could have the clubs playing in Europe not take part in the League Cup that season, then play LC matches at the same time as the European competitions, and use the spare midweek dates for Premier League games - similarly suspend FA Cup replays and the Community Shield and use their slots.

That doesn't really solve the problem I don't think. There will still be players outside the top 6 who are going to the world cup. It's not really fair to make e.g. Everton carry on playing games when some of their best players aren't available to them, but letting the big teams play once they've got all their players back.

Also it comes down to money. If I've understood you right then we'd still have domestic games on at the same time as the world cup. With everyone tuning in to the WC, the TV audiences (and subsequently revenue generated) from the domestic games played at that time would take a massive hit.

Moving the season isn't ideal, but it make the most sense to me. Well, other than not awarding the WC to a country that's literally incapable of hosting it during the scheduled time period Ffs

I take it he means that the clubs in cl and el wont play in the league cup then have the league cup played on the days cl or el are played.

Fa would not agree as that is a source of tv money for them.

I wonder what they're going to do with these stadiums after the tournament is over.

I might be wrong, cos this sounds a bit crazy, but I have a feeling I read somewhere that they've got this plan to dismantle them all and reconstruct them around the region so that the World Cup has a "lasting legacy" for promoting football in the Arab world etc. etc. becuse they know there isn't a demand for them all to be in Qatar but if they spread them out across a few countries it works or something like that

No way they are going to promote and build a grassroots. They'll do exactly what they've done in athletics, handball, etc. and buy talent from across the world.

This WC22 will be a stain football's history.

It should be, but unfortunately I don't think it will be. If teams/FAs/governments wanted to take a stand against it they've had 3 very clear opportunities:
  1. When they were announced in the first place, because it was so blatantly obvious that this was a result of bribes
  2. When they confirmed that the tournament would have to be moved to the winter
  3. When the damning reports about basically slave labour building the stadiums and all the deaths etc
At any of these points, if people really felt strongly about it other than just paying lip service to the general disgruntled mumbling, they could've boycotted the tournament. It would've only taken 4 or 5 of the big nations to pull out in protest for FIFA to cave in an move the tournament elsewhere. Ultimately though, despite all the disapproval that the powers that be express in public, they're not lifting a finger to do anything about it because at the end of the day all they're really bothered about is money too.

At the end of the day, when it comes down to tournament time, the facilities will be top notch for travelling fans because no expense has been spared, the whole place will be a WC party because you've got all the games in one city essentially, and it's still the world cup so people back home will watch it in their millions on TV. I think it's an absolute disgrace that this is being allowed to go on, but I'm also not naive enough to think that when push comes to shove anyone will do anything about it. The recent WC in Russia proved that once it all gets underway people are very quick to turn a blind eye to all the political things going on behind the scenes. It's not right, but it's what will happen.

I'm not saying they will, but I think I remember reading that that's what their alleged plan is. Whether or not it happens I couldn't possibly kinow.

I wouldn't be surprised if they moved the stadiums to different Arab states and then held the football version of the IPL.

Never liked the idea anyway...thank God someone's seen sense....all we need to do now is change the country to host it. Qatar is a ridiculous choice riddled with rumours of bribes and back handers.

Wow, is this actual common sense from FIFA for a change? It was always a crap idea, in particular trying to do it at a WC that's already hosted practically within one city, expanding it was just madness. Thankfully common sense has prevailed for a change

I say common sense, common sense would've been not awarding the WC to a place that's so clearly unfit by every possible criterion other than "Has lots of money to bribe us with" in the first place, but it's a step.

Don't kid yourselves, the only reason it was pulled was because games would've had to be hosted in one of the other Emirates or Saudi Arabia and all the various diplomatic embargoes made that impossible.

The North America 2026 WC will sadly still have 48 teams, even though 32 is the perfect setup with regards to the simplicity of 8 groups of four - top two go through to knockouts. With 48 teams you'll get all sorts of weird permutations that complicate everything.

Well yes it's a stupid idea in general but it would've been an even stupider idea to do it for the Qatar one
