The public will be given a say on controversial plans to rename a train station near Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium after it was revealed the proposal was at an advanced stage after intensive lobbying by the club.

White Hart Lane is a beautiful name as far as I'm concerned!
I'd rather spend the money paying up for a star player where we might be £12-15m apart on valuation with the selling club?

It’s a bit different to a company renaming a station. We’ve been in the local area since 1882, it’s not like Oxford Circus being renamed Nike Circus because Niketown is there. Personally I wouldn’t change it but I can see why the club would want to.

Rather than rename White Hart Lane station, we should lobby for another station to have its original name restored: Gillespie Road.

Sorry if I’m being a bit ignorant here but what value does it add to change the name of a station? Just look at Arsenal....didn’t help them on or off the pitch

I agree with the sentiments on here, leave the station name well alone.

In fact, we should name the stadium White Hart Lane

Very, very against this. Erasing history for a cheap corporate gimmick. Consider my cornflakes pissed on.

If they name it tottenham hotspur stadium, i'd disagree. Following spurs across europe it is really helpful to know what stop to get off to get to the stadium.

Yeah, sorry, I don't buy that argument, with all the technology available theres not really much excuse of getting lost in London anymore. Apps like Citymapper, Google Maps and the like lets you know exactly when and where you need to get off.

I also don't like the precedent it sets of selling off naming rights of public stations to the highest corporate bidder.

Google maps can't help you when you've been on the piss all day and sitting on a metro.

Forget corporate, it's about people knowing where they want to go.

It says they are worried other companies will start making appeals to rename station so they just have to set the criteria as the appellants have to have been in the area for a hundred years and have made a commitment to stay another hundred years and it's sorted. White Hart lane is of no relevance to anybody anywhere other than because of the Spurs so to name it to reflect it being where our club is makes sense in so many ways.

White Hart Lane was of relevance to me when I lived on it.

White hart lane will still be there but the station didn't mean much to me when I lived round the corner.
That's as maybe but you can't universalise your own feeling about it by saying it has 'no relevance to anybody'. There's people living in that area that may not be Spurs fans or may not even like football. For me, the area means a lot - it's where my kids first started going to school and places like Bruce Castle Park where they used to love to go to the playground, it's Tottenham cemetery where I used to go and feed the ducks with my other half and the crappy car boot sale at Haringey Borough where I bought a Lego set for £5 that I later sold for £120! The football club may be a big part of the area but it's more than just that.

It's where I went to school and I played in Bruce Castle park and my grandparents and my dad are buried in the cemetry and my old school, the park and the cemetary are all still there and so is White Hart lane but none of them are dependant on the station's name. That said I was really thinking in terms of the wider world to whom White Hart Lane station means nothing unless they know about Spurs whereas Tottenham Hotspur stadium will.
