Cos that’s what refs always have done when they are behind the play and not sure. They fudge it.

So here's the thing about VAR, like you said the ref's no longer need to take responsibility knowing that now they have the technology to fall back on so they can make half arsed decision like this one knowing that they can always overturn it on replay. But I feel that if you are a weak ref you're going to rely on the technology way too much and not your instinct.

VAR isn't doing anything other than highlighting how bad referee's are, if you're weak minded and genuinely swayed then you're likely to become autonomous and allow the technology to manage big decisions and it's just gonna get worse.
