The ball is played from the byeline in a corner. For any player to be ahead of the ball they’d need to be on the goal line and the corner taken from the back of the quadrant.

Was the player called offside standing on the goal line?

No.

The corner taker played a short corner, and started running back.
He was called offside, when running back past his teammate to collect the pass back to him.
His heel was offside, as it was ahead of the ball, and the defender.

It is correct, it turns out. But seemed odd as I don’t think I have ever seen an offside call like it.

I didn’t think you couldnt be offside if the ball was passed backwards?
I thought that but it's the player being behind the ball not the ball going backwards
I thought I knew the laws fairly well but I had absolutely no idea that you could be offside from a pass that goes backwards. I don't think I've ever seen it happen before.
What @Sandros Shiny Head said - a player behind (and possibly level with?) the ball cannot be offside. Ordinarily this would be the case if the ball was passed backwards to a player, but when you take whip/curl into account...

Most in-form English striker around atm. Really hope he does well in the March games and goes to the Euros.

Saints have a poor record against Burnley apparently. Didn't expect this given their form though.

What's his name - the commentator - who just said "any port in a storm for Burnley" when Vydra scored?
