Pochettino: 'Maybe we need more quality in the squad'

Yes but we won't pay the prices for the quality required so you need to look at how you get the players fired up for these statement matches. I know we've had some injuries but this 4-1-4-1 formation clearly isn't working either so it needs to be binned.

He has his head in the sand. He selected the wrong team last night and has not helped with disastrous signings like Sissoko. Get a grip Poch.

In all honesty I think we're getting away with it in the Premier League but didn't get away with it in the CL. We're not doing what we did last season (i.e. pressing and winning the ball high up the pitch) and we're too ponderous in open play. Not blaming him specifically but Eriksen has lost his shooting boots which nicked us a lot of results last year. We have largely the same bunch of players who worked their nuts off last season but don't seem up for it now.

Bit of an easy way out for Poch there, his team selection when resting or accommodating injured players is pretty poor outside the 3 5 1. Presumably he sanctioned the buys we made and they seem to not be the right players. Press is only half hearted and for short periods with Lamela out it seems there is no one setting the tone. Fullbacks and Keeper aside he has a shitload of work to do in both man management and on the training pitch right now. It's down to him imo not sure will be opening the cheque book anytime soon for the type of am quality we need.

Poch getting his excuses in early maybe shifting it onto levy and consider, whatever the rights and wrongs they need to sort themselves out and fast.

Toby and Lamela are so key for us. Yet the form of Eriksen, Alli, the fitness of Dembele are worries. Dele maybe is suffering from the learning curve after a breakthrough season when now more is expected, Dier maybe suffering from not being able to play in the position he did so well in last season ... and the combination of him with Toby and Jan is so balanced. Kane looked tired at the start of the season and is not yet match fit. Son looks like a great player to have in the bench but not really a starter. Walker and Rose are almost too key at the moment and the rest need to step up.

We miss the option of Chadli off the bench but Winks looks like a more effective player than Mason but we need more quality back up players

For 4-1-4-1 to be effective it needs proper wide players with pace which we just don't have. In fact, we just spent the last few seasons shipping those players out as they didn't fit the previous system.

We have Nkoudou but he has rarely featured. Selling Chadli looks like a big balls up at the moment

Agree on Sissoko but that is being probably being wise after (though some will argue he wasn't convincing at Newcastle). With Rose and Davies unavailable at the weekend the rest for Vertonghen and Walker is understandable, Erikson doesnt make any difference at the moment and he isn't a leader. I am very disappointed as the players on the pitch should have performed better, but have to understand the selection.

Yet Pochettino is the one who supposedly demanded Levy spunk £30 million on Sissoko.
It's time Poch took a bit of a look at himself rather than casting blame elsewhere.

Taken from BBC website at post-match press conference:

"From the beginning of the season, I said our challenge was not physical, it was tactical - to manage your mind and to play on Saturday and then Tuesday or Wednesday"

What absolute drivel.
Last season they played Sunday/Thursday so the time between games is the same as it has been this season.
If Poch is focussing more on the mental side of the game than the physical and tactical then it's no wonder we're all over the place at times.

They're a young team, i think we've expected too much from them that a slump of some kind was/is inevitable. They'll bounce back but might not live up to they're billing for a season or two given the stadium disruption. i just hope Levy can stay loyal to the manager in the meantime.

Would have Mason and Chadli in a heart beat.

Definitely think we miss Mason. At the moment we have nobody deeper in midfield moving the ball forward quickly. Last season Dembele actually played that deeper role with a bit of urgency but that seems to have fallen away. The problem is people just look too much at the technical side of things and don't take into account other qualities that players have and it was clear that Mason was a positive influence on the squad.

We spent £60m on 3 players in the summer. You'd expect some quality for that.

Don't think lack of spending is the problem.

This might not be such a bad thing.

I just hope we don't end up qualifying for the bloody Europa League.

We need to spend time training and focusing on one main event per week, that's all we can afford with this squad
