The issue is he’s 19 years old and raw so he’s going to have loads of poor games and make poor decisions because the end product and decision making comes with experience.

Had we done our job and signed a top quality winger who was more developed it wouldn’t be so bad but because we didn’t do that the pressure on Odobert is massive.

He needs a couple of seasons to develop where as we wanted to see the team improve this season.
Fair point on Odobert... du you see the same need for Bergvall, Gray, Moore etc. ?

Because they have less PL experience than Odobert and they are younger. If so, then we are in trouble in midfield as well. 🤷‍♂️😁

They were bought as backup to be developed behind senior players. Odobert was signed as the profile solution to a huge weakness in our starting 11. We need him to deliver pretty much right away or it's hard to see much improving this season. Not his fault he's been put in that situation but it's the reality.

Who said he was signed as a profile position or starter?

He's still a teenager mate

Fair enough... let's see how it pans out...👍 but yes... more quality is always needed in some positions. Odobert certainly fits the way we play.

He's starting games so he has to deliver, teenager or not. It's not his fault as he should be a backup but many said this about the window

As others have said we have pretty good strength in depth in midfield where as we are so weak out wide and have no one with Odobert’s profile.

There is always a chance one of the teens we’ve got explodes this season but realistically it would probably only be one of them if any. These players need time to make mistakes and develop.

The issue for Odobert is we needed someone out wide who was more developed to come in alongside him.

That was his second game for us and he is only 19. The decision making will come with game time and training with his new team as he learns to adapt to what Ange wants.

No one better than him in the squad it appears so give him game time and hope his learning curve is a short one . No other choice really as Werner is clearly not the answer.

Then the fanbase needs to be patient with him as he learns, makes mistakes and grows. Likewise with Gray and Bergvall. This fanbase has previous for getting on players backs and not letting it go. I just hope we give these kids time and room before giving them even 1% of the Emerson, Dier, Johnson, Hojbjerg, Sanchez, Sissoko treatment.

I think this thread shows the differences in perception for what we expect this season.
Here's the thing, we ain't winning the league this season as whether we like it or not it really is a development season and by no means close to the finished article. The players we have are going to improve as well as the team as a whole and Wilson Odobert is included in that.

This is why we needed to sign a more established winger alongside Odobert.

It's unfair to expect a 19-year-old coming from Burnley to instantly transform our attack.

We can bang on about what we should or could have done in the transfer window but it's done now. Let's all just support the players and the manager, especially the younger lads. All the discussion about the last transfer window should just stop now because it's not going to change anything regardless of what you think we did well or not.

There is absolutely no denying that his end product was dreadful yesterday, but I was surprised by his physicality. He's not afraid to put himself about a bit, I don't get the feeling he'll be brushed aside by opposing full-backs too often.

I think all the deficiencies which I can see with his game are things which can be improved on with time. We've heard from both Kompany and Parker that he is an incredibly grounded lad, and keen to learn. He's been put in a situation which he shouldn't have been in, expected to come in as our primary wing-forward signing and deliver the goods straight away. It was never going to happen.

I don't know what the solution in the PL is, but for now I see him as a player who will get loads of starts in the cup games, and I think he'll steadily build his game from there.

Sigh….. this is such a reductive question.
Why? We have our development player so then it's the question of who are the game changing wingers, who have the right profile that are available. Not pretty good ones, who then become our next deadwood. The list, I'm guessing is minute and the ones we really want either don't want us or are too expensive, like Nico Williams.
Neto was never coming to us once Chelsea sniffed. Not because we wouldn't pay but because Mendes got a sniff of getting a pay day from 3 deals, Gallagher, Felix, Neto. That's how he works.

I do agree... but at some point we also have to accept that we try to find a good mixture of proven and younger players. I get that Odobert may be a bit raw... but he has played in the PL and has the tools for Ange's system... and if other clubs can take chances on young players... we should be able to do it...

In central midfield it's easier to combine a young and a proven player. Because it's more of a partnership... the wing position is about rotating if you want quality as well as a young talent with possibilities going forward.

But it's also a position that allows you to take chances... I can see Odobert blossom and learning fast... depth in position is another issue. If we talk about a long season where we want to be a force in several tournaments.

And yes... we do have depth in midfield... but not top quality players... it's not like it's class material...
