Agreeing a deal verbally and then trying to get more money is standard operating practice for Daniel Levy so I don't know why he'd be offended. Poch clearly wasn't happy about it, but he's gone now so we move on. The new contract is in the club's best interests in my opinion.

So Poch was a victim of his loyalty to Club and Chairman. Maybe he's too much of a gentleman for cutthroat football.

That’s saved us looking for a replacement for Toby and saved us the best part of £50m. The change from Poch to Mourinho is not looking so hard on the coffers now!

What are you on about? Everyone and their mother absolutely adores Toby and considers him the best defensive player we’ve had and debate him or Ledley.

Anyway, the best non-Belgian defender at the club currently is Davinson Sanchez. The best defender at the club over Toby’s time here has been Jan.

FYP.

Great news, obviously. Get Vertonghen a new deal and we won't have to worry about CB for a couple of more seasons.

Still can't believe a big club didn't sign him in the summer.

Excellent. Our best CB over the past few years, injury aside.
has found a new lease of life under Jose and we are playing to his strengths.

Not so great at 1v1s anymore but his passing will be even more useful under Mourinho and Foyth and Sanchez could learn a lot from him.

"...It's not only me, my family is very happy here...

Let's not miss this bit. Like Mourinho, I expect it heavily influenced his decision. There may also have been some intense discussions with his partner about the merits of uprooting. It isn't always just about money.
It's Jose locking down a spine isn't it.

I didn't realise he was also an osteopath.
I wonder what he’s on now
Just Red Bull and other caffeine drinks, I'd expect. They get tested for most everything else.

Very pleased and also very surprised for a couple of reasons;
1) Toby is just a few days away from being able to negotiate a summer Bosman deal.
2) It's very unlike Levy to offer big contracts to ageing players.

I'm sure the prospect of having to shell out big money for a quality replacement is a big part of Levy's thinking, but I also think it shows that he is backing Mourinho fully and Mourinho was probably a big driver behind this. Either way, it feels like we've picked up a top quality player on a Bosman when I was expecting the exact opposite.

I wonder what Rose is thinking after his comments about the club regarding contracts to players aged 30+.

It was said that there were several clubs willing to pay the 25 mill to take him, but he was not interested in going these particular clubs.

Another credit to our PR team by announcing Toby's signing today, therefore diluting the news effect of Mikel Arteta's move to the gooners!!

By the way for months I've been reading that players who aren't committed enough to sign a new contract should be left to rot in the reserves. There's no way Toby would've signed a new contract if we'd done that to him.

Agreed, although I think most of the “left to rot in the reserves” comments have been directed at Eriksen.

Toby, to his great credit has been a model professional, even though his contract was running down.

he never wanted to leave.

I said weeks before MP was sacked certain players would be interested in resigning if Poch was to go. if not they'd be leaving.
