Wasn't it reported a while back that Poch had wiped the slate clean for everyone last season? Perhaps things have changed and the ITK has yet to catch up?

I think he’s off and he probably does too. At least he’s saying the right things about his situation. Unlike someone else.

Yes because it worked out so well for sol campbell saying he wanted to stay. Right up to the minute he fucked off.

At least chris is being honest to the fans.

I don't think it is a case of Toby being dishonest.. More likely just making sure he doesn't burn any bridges in case a move doesn't happen for any reason.

I have a feeling he’s running his contract down to move to Ajax on a free to end his career. Born out of the interview after the semifinal.

I can't see him running his contract out. He has now played 2 seasons at a wage level some £60K per week below what Spurs offered him to extend. He has already left circa £6m on the table, another year is another £3m going begging. Is his next deal as a 31 year old going to recoup him the £9m he has forfeited by holding out. Now is his time to get his money wither from us or someone else. I don't see him going to Ajax in 12 months time for this exact reason. I see him there in 3 years to finish his career. The rumours were Poch got him the £120k a week he was looking for start of the 2017 season, only for his dad to increase the request to £180K p/w at the last minute after Poch went to the board to convince them to pay at this level to a defender going into his 30s.

Still a bit too young for that IMO. Maybe when he’s 34 or something.

Ajax are a great team and want to win their domestic league and do well in the CL. They won't want him when he's past his best they will want him now (if they do), and I'm sure he feels the same. This isn't like MLS where pros go to retire for an easy life

Wasn't there some comment a year or so back about his parents missing him or something too? I wouldn't be shocked if you are bang on the money. Maybe it's not a last big pay day that he wants, rather a move that Ajax can afford without blowing their budget

Erm....you’re forgetting one really important point mate?! Salaries. Toby wants 200 grand a week. You think Ajax can or will pay that? Not in a million years. So it’s a non starter. Like I said, maybe when he’s 34.

I’m well aware who Ajax are as a club and team by the way.

Toby “supposedly” (if true) wants 200k a week to stay at Spurs!

That doesn’t mean he wouldn’t accept a lower salary elsewhere if that’s where he wants to be.

Not saying that’s how it is here, but one has to be be careful quoting what players want and declaring that’s the undisputed benchmark for all scenarios.

Also, no transfer fee = large signing on fee to compensate for potentially lower wages

Toby by the end of next season will have missed out on three seasons worth of £3m a year more than he’s currently earning roughly, so £9m.

So he could leave now, at 30, with any club paying £25m or he could leave in a year, for free, at 31, so probably the same salary as now and make up that £9m lost and then another £5/6m on top knowing that whoever signs him is getting him without shelling out the £25m transfer fee they would’ve this summer.

He’s played this very well.
