He did well to get into those positions in the first place with excellent pace and movement.

Disagree he’s not doing himself any favours whilst Son and Odobert are out, a few 1v1 misses aside he’s been a real threat in both recent matches.

Of course we hope he starts to take more of those 1v1 chances as the season goes on but I certainly don’t think he’s been playing badly, far from it tbh.
What are your expectations of werner this season? Would you see him signed on a permanent basis? If not, then he is what he is, a limited stop gap until the squad achieves fitness and some depth. it was a no brainer to bring him on loan.

But Id argue that he gets himself into threatening positions, but isn't threatening. His finishing was a standing joke long before he came here on loan. So the argument 'he just needs a goal' is a bit like his shooting, weak.

The obvious cliche of 'i hope he comes good' in terms of goals applies. But looking at the output from the rest of the forwards in this system by comparison he is lacking.

He's by no means a bad player. But he is an atrocious finisher. On current evidence. Anyway, very useful like poly filler to plug holes.

Tbh I don’t think we need to think right now about if we will renew the loan again or sign him permanently, too many variables which can change within the squad between now and end of the season so I’m simply saying if he gets a goal and keeps getting decent game time that should improve his confidence and as a bi-product his performances this season should further improve hopefully.

Well I agree with you somewhat but then he undoes all the good work by fluffing the ending part so imo it cancels it out.

This is not a form thing. He is just not very good, end of discussion and never has been. He has pace but that's about it. There's no skill, guile or intelligence to anything he does.

Ange made a mistake renewing his loan. The sooner he goes the better it is for the development of others.

All IMO of course.
As hugely disagreeable that this is aside, to then decorate it with 'end of discussion' really sets it off rather nicely :D

It amazes me that so many fail to see the bigger picture, in that we look really well balanced as a team with his skill set in it.

Yes the misses are frustrating but we should acknowledge the affect he's having for the greater good of the team and get behind the lad.

Totally. Happily, there are also plenty on here that do - justice for Werner

I really do agree with you but his misses kept our last two games alive for our opponents when we should have been home and hosed

Wish he'd just fkin belt one

I can’t see it, but the arguments about balance and the rest, whilst he makes wrong choices, end product etc. Failure to score open goals, as good as, which puts us under pressure, is really baffling.

Frustrating!!!

These are huge chances that decide games and against the better teams will cost us, big time

You cannot keep missing these types of chances if you have any aspirations to win something and/or finish top 4

He's really not good enough. He's been fortunate that his fluffed chances haven't decided a game yet, but eventually it will.

Hopefully Son is back asap and then i'd have Mikey ahead of him as a replacement.

You're completely asuming other options will be in those positions to finish.

The point is we were tearing United apart and he contributed to that, with his pace and directness.

On the one hand, he makes sense as a player to fill the gaps when Son is injured and Moore is carefully brought through.

At the same time, those 1v1 misses are going to cost us one day. UTD almost came back against us at 2-0 and whilst the primary cause is our inability to control and strangle the life out of a game, part of that strangulation includes putting the opponent to the sword when the opportunity presents itself.

Werner being the player to make that final cut is not going to work.

Amazing really. Werner has earn't many many millions just because of the very good start to his career. He has not been able to repeat those early seasons goal scoring exploits neither here or at Chelsea. He must still have the talent somewhere inside of him but no one has been able to bring it back out.

Honestly, the lad works hard, has the right attitude and is really effective from the wing. Poor guy just can't hit a barn door. Surely just take him to one side and have him do shooting drills all week.

He'll be smashing them in in training, I'm certain of that. This is purely mental. He feels all the pressure and those misses for Chelsea are still in his head.

Last night it looked like he'd watched back the misses against Man Utd, and thought "I should have just taken it left and rounded the keeper" and he's deliberately tried to do that. A case of overthinking rather than trusting instinct.

Yep I’m thinking the same mate it’s not a fundamental technical issue more of a decision making and mental one.

If we see his highlights from his 28 goal season he was hammering finishes past the keeper or confidently rounding the keeper, right now he’s a bit inbetween both, needs more conviction and confidence, that might come over the season as he plays more games.
If we look at highlights of Dele five years ago he looks a quality player. Some players get better over time and some players get worse. Werner has clearly got worse, it’s not even up for debate. To think he’ll get anywhere close to the level he was scoring at before is misguided, it just isn’t going to happen.

Best case is he doesn’t get the opportunity to score but continues to play okay on the left while son is out because the minute we don’t win and he’s missed another big chance is when some of the people easily forgiving him will not be so forgiving and some of the boo boys in the crowd will capitalise on the opportunity.
