Think he shot too early on both chances, he should have gone on for another metre or so for both. It’s a classic sign of a player with low self belief who seems happy to just get a shot on target

Thought Onana deserves a lot of credit on the first one he was out to Werner in a flash and on the second I thought he pulled off a top drawer save. Onana had a hell of a game pulling off top drawer saves on the Madds and Solanke 1v1’s as well as Werner’s.

Thought he offered quite a bit to our play. A luxury that we can tolerate two very good chances being missed but still a solid 7/10 for me.
Nah, you can't give him a 7/10 when he missed two one on ones.

I'm all for supporting our players but, for me at least, I actually felt he was going to miss both. If that was Johnson a couple of weeks a go, he'd have been absolutely crucified on here.

His all round play is very good, but he just can't finish, I think it's time for Moore.

He also had a great chance to create an easy goal and fluffed the pass.

The big difference is that the Solanke one on one was a brilliant save from Onana, I wouldn't say that about the Werner chances.

I still think Werner can contribute, but not so much in the goals column. I'd be absolutely amazed if he's playing for us next season.

Let's be honest if we had everyone fit he'd be behind Son, Richarlison, Odebert and (soon) Moore.

I'm critical of him and it's such a shame that he has completely lost the plot in front of goal. Clips of him from his breakout season(s) in Germany and he's like a different person. He's a disastrous finisher and it must be psychological. But maybe someone can help him while he's with us. He could be the individual version of what the team is going through...learning to be so relentless with chance creation that you just need a decent percentage.

I hope he scores a one-on-one soon. Surely he's practicing that the whole time in training, so it's bizarre how he can't seem to finish at all in that scenario during a game.

Funny how some great footballers can't put their laces through the ball.
Lamela was one. It was like hitting the ball with a fish.
I'm the same. As is Werner.
We must all have unusually large schlongs.

The first 1v1 was so easy too. Onana completely exposed himself and all Werner had to do was go to his left and he’d have gone round him with ease.

There is no doubt his pace is a weapon but the problem is he just isn’t reliable, even when he hasn’t played badly. We might have got away with it yesterday but I guarantee his inability in front of goal and end product wise will him cost us quite a lot of points if he plays regularly.

Yes we shouldn’t have re signed him but he is still a pretty good player .

His pressing is excellent, he offer pace in behind and fulfills the role Ange asks. It’s just his finishing that lets him down.

Chances missed aside yesterday he was very good, and whilst it probably shouldn’t be true of an experienced pro he clearly suffers from poor confidence and that effects him in front of goal.

Get behind him as he will be a real asset if he can knock a couple of goals in.

On his first one on one I think he should of rounded Onana, he had the momentum and pace to do it as was on edge of box and De lit wasnt getting back.

Do you still think the United squad is better? Lol

If he could finish he would be up there with some of the best players in the world. I think he lacks confidence, but he gives it 100% everytime he plays and honestly some of his movement is the best I have seen. He’s always making intelligent runs hence why he got so many one on ones. I really hope he can work on his finishing and get some confidence. He is no where near the worse player we have signed though, and Ange likes him.

He's a disastrous finisher and it must be psychological.

Yeah, I think it's partly psychological, but there's also not much evidence to suggest he's more than a ten-goals-a-season player at the top level. He scored 23 goals for Chelsea over two seasons in all competitions and managed only two for us last season. It's been over 5 seasons since he scored more than 10 league goals in a single season.

A target of around ten in all competitions this season seems reasonable for him. He gets into good positions, so if he finds a bit of form and builds his confidence, ten goals should be achievable, especially with the Europa League games in the mix.

I don’t think werner was that bad? Yes he missed two one on ones, the first was a very good save. But we know he can’t finish, the movement for both, the control etc is excellent.

He also had 3 very good moments where he absolutely did the rb and put in very good balls to the box, two we very nearly scored from.

He’s not a world beater but I think he looked a lot better today. He just needed game time and he’ll need to play Thursday again so he’ll continue to get better.

He's always been that guy, that never stopped. Look at what Leipzig fans said when Chelsea bought him, he is playing exactly the same then as now. Go back to threads when he was linked with clubs (including spurs) in 2014 when he was still at stuttgart because it was exactly the same, he hasn't changed. Fast, hard working etc but technically rough around the edges and needs to improve finishing a lot, but if he improves those things he could be a monster. Fast forward 10 years and how much has he progressed? It's exactly the same deficiencies in his game. It was a bit better in terms of finishing but Leipzig created so many chances and so much better chances tearing teams apart that he could actually score goals, but even then he's never been a good finisher, ever. Apologies for trhe self indulgence but quoting myself from January before he joined:

Does that not describe him as a player? I used to watch the guy now and then because Leipzig were a fun team and his entire career is deja vu, you could swap him as a player in his late teens, early-mid 20s and now at any point in his career the end result would be near identical, I don't know if I've he's improved as a player whatsoever. Worst kind of hope because he clearly has some of the tools to be a good player, but he hasn't been able to refine other parts of his game to push him on at all and take himself to the next level

great post

I think this is the timo Werner thread and you should try and debate that in the man united one if it bothers you so much that I heard a talking point on the athletic pod and thought it was an interesting one.

I also think you should know better than to try and call people out based on one result.

This is not a form thing. He is just not very good, end of discussion and never has been. He has pace but that's about it. There's no skill, guile or intelligence to anything he does.

Ange made a mistake renewing his loan. The sooner he goes the better it is for the development of others.

All IMO of course.

Ok but if we didn’t renew his loan… we would have had a 17 year old starting and no winger on the bench? We needed him from a squad building perspective.
