Jose’s take

“It’s very difficult to start a player who doesn’t have 90 minutes in him when there is a chance you could go to extra time,” Mourinho said. “You know with that player you already have one substitution. But without Dele Alli, Lamela and Lo Celso I need somebody to connect a little bit. So I have to start with Tanguy even though I know he couldn’t play. So after one hour they [the fans] don’t follow. Maybe they think this coach is an idiot for taking him off. I’m not an idiot.”

Funnily enough, people were questioning Lo Celso's desire just 2 months ago (Bayern game springs to mind) and we had comments like "he simply isn't a Jose player" and "will go the way of Mata under Jose", even at the start of January people were saying he was too ponderous and would never adapt to the pace of the PL and now he is arguably our most important player.

A lot can change in a couple of months.
I hope so as Ndombele has all the skills.

I love his honesty and clear and concise messages. I do note an undercurrent in that article that is mocking of Jose and just waiting for him to fail.

And it may fail. In this modern world of players being precious babies who can’t handle criticism and the board wanting managers to toe the party line maybe his approach is too old school, but I personally like it.

Quick question where can you get stats on distance covered per match, number of sprints, etc for Ndombele, would be interesting to compare this season to last season if that has not already been done.

Would be interesting to see the comparison

Seems a fair enough comment, and maybe this game came too early for Ndombele, but Jose’s hand was forced by all the injuries.

the one hope I have is the form of LOCelso as he seemed not up to it but came good the difference with Ndombele is he has th ability but not the fitness . This Ndombele thing is really down to the player if you remember Kane talking about his diet and fitness regime it cried out that he wanted it because he was willing to give up some things he liked for success .
This bloke seems to look like someone who maybe trains OK but does not eat the right foods a top athlete must do to be super fit I know its only a guess but judging his inability to go past 60 minutes its a fair bet this is the reason he is obviously carrying too much weight .
I think its down to him does he want it enough to do the right thing your guess is as good as my guess .

There was also the guy who played squash against his pal for an hour, which is of course just as hard as competing at the top level of professional football.

You probably won't find any detailed stats for free. Champions League are showing Distance Covered for midfielders so i compared them.

Mourinho with his honest interviews is also giving the information to Levy while speaking to the world. Its not a negotiation, its the truth

I think its more about the energy NDombele gives when he has the ball to the energy he doesn't when he doesn't have the ball. This creates this dichotomy and confusion with how fans assess him.
Distance is like possession stats.

Rose in an interview today said he is "awesome" so that's high praise from a fellow professional who has seen a lot more of him than most and wouldn't be minded to say it if it wasn't true.

It’s like having an alcoholic Zidane. Just need to get him back on the straight and narrow.

You're right. It's no where near the level. That was my point. Tanguy is a professional athlete who's job it is to be fit and in shape. Not just a professional but a professional playing for one of the top teams on the planet. I don't think it's wrong for me to expect him to be in good enough shape to play more than 20 mins of top flight football.
