Question for me is this really a signing for now or next season. Its an exciting purchase of young promising player but given how previous signings have tended to take some time to bed in we should be careful not to put too much expectation on the kid. Strikes me as a grab him whilst you can signing and then assess squad strength in the summer to maybe replace Lamela, Moura, Son (if #bigclub comes calling) etc.

I’ll be referring to him as Steve.

Partly due to Pochettino never actually playing them for their first six months here, I imagine.

And then we wonder how we became so stale.

I think a lot of people romanticise over Berge simply because he is attainable and plays an in-demand position. He is a decent proposition, but I find him rather overrated.

To say there is no DM in the world with a higher quality than Berge is simply ludicrous though. Whether they are available or not, Berge wouldn't be near the top 20 DMs. Ndidi would be my dream signing FWIW.

Maybe. I have watched Berge since he was 18. He is a special special player.

Doesn't mean that he would be better than someone like N'Didi (possibly the best DM in the PL at the moment) of course. He is a 21 year old with experience from Belgium. I can't guarantee anything, but I am 100% certain I know more than you about Berge and it is not "simply lucicrous". The biggest question mark is if he is able to handle the higher intensity in the PL.

We should have a Berge-thread it seems like.

Two seasons (Including this season) in the past 50+ years they've finished above us.
While your intended point is valid, they actually finished above us 4 years straight in 96/97, 97/98, 98/99 and 99/2000. We finished above them the following season by one place, they were relegated the season after that, then became a yoyo club for a few seasons before the Martin Jol era solidified us as a more successful club.... that is until 15/16 :(

Let's not open up a can of worms debate needlessly here when this is a so far enjoyable and constructive thread. If anybody is offended by any particular posts they can easily click the highly visible report button so that the mods can deal with it.

Although in my opinion clearly not your intention and I know Cloudy well enough to understand why you find it funny, because Bergwijn is a black player some might see having a monkey character in a negative light due to perceived racism. Personally in my opinion not your intention but that is what is being inferred here.

I'm not offended, more of a heads up

As others have said, the type of signing we need to make more often. Superb talent, needs to develop a bit further, and a very fair price. Will have other clubs' fans scratching their heads wondering why they weren't in for him in a few years, methinks. Should be a star.

Blimey. I'd completely blanked out those late 90's years, but you're right. Your man Ginola being the only bright light in an extremely dark era to be a Spurs fan. Prior to them coming up into the PL they were a complete irrelevance to me, and until they fluked a league title they were also a complete irrelevance.

They have a good squad right now, arguably a better First XI than us, on the whole, but bigger clubs will come and pick off those players in the summer, then we'll see where they're at after that.

Totally agree, and I don't regard them as being a patch on us as a club, I was just being a pedant.

Even West Ham have a European trophy...
