I bang on about it every window. Doesn't matter how much the player costs, he has to be the right player. Our own transfer history has shown that. Obviously bringing in proven talent can work in the league, but it also doesn't. Eg. Shevchenko, Veron etc.

Yeah, a lot of our more expensive signings have proved the biggest disappointments for various reasons. And on the flip side, we shouldn’t be high fiving each other over a perceived bargain price of of a player if it’s a cheap option because he’s not very good.

All I’m interested in is whether they are a good fit for the PL, gives us something we don’t necessarily have or adds competition where we need it, fits the way the manger wants to play and can make an impact now ( and I don’t mean score a hat trick on their debut, just a player for now rather than 3 or 4 years time).

It wasn't really "quite quickly" it took over 5 years. 5 years is a long time in football.
Tbh our team still isn't that old, it simply went from being the youngest team in the league to about average. Kane, Son, Eriksen and many others are still in their prime - it's only really Verts who is actually old and he's a CB.

Compared to some recent City and Juve teams our squad is still fresh from the womb.

The actual fee is also less important than many think. Payment structures can be easy or crippling and wages/length of contract are every bit as significant as will become more obvious with more quality players looking to move on Bomans

There is no DM in the world of much higher quality than Berge - higher yes, but not much higher. And if you include potential the list becomes extremely short.

I love that we are looking at players in the age group you will find Fernandes, Bergwijn etc. Baffling how we went from being very young to rather old quite quickly under Pochettino. I was afraid that Mourinho would continue down the old and experienced route, but it seems not. Berge would supplement Fernandes, Bergwijn, Tanganga, maybe even Aarons etc. perfectly.

Lloris - Alderweireld - Kane would be the experienced spine. Son, Lucas, Davies etc. gives us more than enough experience even if we go all out early 20s on the rest.

Sorry if I’ve missed it, have we been linked with Berge recently? As a Norwegian I would love us to sign him, if only for us to get a bit more coverage in Norwegian media - we’re drowning in Liverpool and United love ?

I've watched him play live 4 times. Once against Spurs and 3 times when I lives in Amsterdam (twice against Ajax).

He looked decidedly average (at present). I'm sure football scouts have seen potential and it sounds like he had a great season when PSV won the title. But in those 4 games, he was a "6/10" by football manager standards. Pace, quick feet but no real end product. Runs with the ball well and at defenders but did nothing special.

He is quite a lot smaller than his teammates though he looks strong on the ball.

Really don't know whether he'd actually add much to our forward options (actually think Sessegnon looks more promising on that left of a 3). Good to have healthy competition!

Whilst his stats can only be used as an indicator, they suggest he's not too shabby.

Like any signing, you just got to hope that they can come in and excel.

At the price mooted, I'd be more concerned if we didn't take the leap of faith. Read so many times why didn't we sign player X,Y,Z before they signed for club A,B or C for a reasonable fee.Excelled, now worth big bucks.

No guarantees when signing a player.

But if you don't try... you'll never know.

Hope as fans our expectations are realistic when he plays this season! He may be a phenomenon but I suspect he'll take at least a year or more to show what he's capable of.

I think a lot of people romanticise over Berge simply because he is attainable and plays an in-demand position. He is a decent proposition, but I find him rather overrated.

To say there is no DM in the world with a higher quality than Berge is simply ludicrous though. Whether they are available or not, Berge wouldn't be near the top 20 DMs. Ndidi would be my dream signing FWIW.
